I never liked a steady rest that would grind on the metal being turned, I use teflon sheet.
I have 2 steady rests for 18" swing lathes and they have sealed ball bearings, one in the end of each support rod.

Re: Trucks

Not trying to hijack this, but Curious if you are still working on your CNW locomotive Peter? Yep. Chassis is running on air and all the boiler plates are cut and prepped for welding. Firebox is welded and is waiting for the mud ring pieces to be welded. Got my tender trucks from Dave several years...

Hello, I have a 2-4-2 oil burner that has a spark plug in the center of the firebox. My question is what can I use to spark the plug and will it re-light the oil spray?
Thank you
Tom

Re: CNW J class Mikado

With your CAD models, I saw it on a picture I have of 2908 straight across the left side. When I zoom up, I see the Inspirator. Let me know when you get it working. It really looks good.

These are machine screw sizes.

Tim
Tim, you might look at McMaster-Carr and their "Machine-Your-Own 5C Collets". They're 5C and one type is made of brass. Bore exactly what you need.

Re: Expansion Links and Blocks

there is a fellow in LS&ORR who is advertising this service. note that WEDM does a better job on hardened steel than soft steel, hence what you do and the order in which you do it is important. To make a good link you need to start with unhardened steel then: drill / tap / harden / grind to thickne...

Re: CNW J class Mikado

How is your locomotive coming along Peter? Tim Right now, I need to finish the rear steam chest covers and the valve stem crosshead and guides. All the rest of the valve gear is done. Once I get these parts made, I can try it on air. I've had it towed around Don Saagar's track twice and it tracked ...
