I have 2 steady rests for 18" swing lathes and they have sealed ball bearings, one in the end of each support rod.

Not trying to hijack this, but Curious if you are still working on your CNW locomotive Peter? Yep. Chassis is running on air and all the boiler plates are cut and prepped for welding. Firebox is welded and is waiting for the mud ring pieces to be welded. Got my tender trucks from Dave several years...

With your CAD models, I saw it on a picture I have of 2908 straight across the left side. When I zoom up, I see the Inspirator. Let me know when you get it working. It really looks good.

Tim, you might look at McMaster-Carr and their "Machine-Your-Own 5C Collets". They're 5C and one type is made of brass. Bore exactly what you need.

there is a fellow in LS&ORR who is advertising this service. note that WEDM does a better job on hardened steel than soft steel, hence what you do and the order in which you do it is important. To make a good link you need to start with unhardened steel then: drill / tap / harden / grind to thickne...
