Re: Painting the lathe?

I mixed grey and white tremclad to the desired shade, and sprayed a 10ee about 10 yrs ago, paint is holding up just fine and still looks good.

Re: rusty compound slide ways - a death sentence?

I’ve had a similar version of this lathe since ‘89. As Bill suggested, the top slide and crosswise come from the factory a bit wobbly. Rust doesn’t do any favours, but the majority of the material will still be there where it should, interspersed with pitting. Consider it oil retention, and don’t wo...

Re: Pratt burnerd collet Chuck

There’s a new version and an old version. Looks like you have the newer collets with the older body. I have the old style where the collets have a flat face, so end up recessed behind the front plate. I’m away from home, so no photos. I don’t see why you couldn’t bore out the front plate to accommod...

Can't disengage it on the 10EE. But the leadscrew only turns for threading too.

Re: cross hair wire

I've a manual for a K&E transit (I think that's the one) that mentions using a forked stick to wrap a couple lengths of spider silk while the spider is descending. The forked stick is then used to transfer the strand onto the crosshair mount, which is then shellacked in place. May have been in a...

Re: 3 phase convertor failure

If he's spinning it up to 3000 rpm with a pony and it won't pick up when power is applied, it's not going to start with a kick to the pulley. I've built 4 rpc's and the only thing I would suggest is to recheck your connections. Are you SURE they are correct? Did a #6 get swapped with a #9 wire perha...

Re: Ways

American Tool Works used 4 V ways. They claimed increased accuracy, less wear due to swarf less likely to stay on the V etc. I doubt it really matters that much in the end - proper lubrication is probably the MOST important thing, and it seems that few lathes actually put lube on the ways - just rel...

Re: Drill chuck removal with wedges

I'm trying to remember where I just read it, but it was a very reputable company like Deckel or Moore that insisted on hammering the sides of the arbor with a brass? hammer until the taper releases. It certainly works well for ball joint tapers on vehicles, and I did use the method recently on a chu...

Re: Gears and gear cutting by Ivan Law

I built one, in half size about 15 years back. It works well, but I only used it for one cutter so far. I did find that the form tool I had made was not leaving a particularly good finish when relieving the cutter blank, which resulted in a less than ideal finish on the gear being cut. So spend some...

Re: Moving - How to do it?

Being military, I've moved many times - hopefully no more! If you're going from a tool rare area to a tool rich area - sell the heaviest stuff and replace it when you get to your new location. I've always moved my own larger equipment - the smaller stuff the movers love, as it's high weight, high de...

Re: I am going to die...... Well Sometime ...... Not soon I

I'm quite sure that once I'm dead, I really won't care how much money came from the sale of my tools. My wife used to fret about what to do with the shop full of tools - I told her to keep it easy, call an auctioneer. They'll advertise, sell it and have it gone - mostly on the day of the sale. The t...
