Re: Free 2D CAD Software?

I have been using Linux since I retired, so I am always on the look out for functioning open source software. I recently discovered QCAD. It is free and works very similar to my recollections of Autocad for DOS circa 1990. Their website https://qcad.org/en/ says it will work with Mac and Windows as...

Re: Reverse is fine, no forward

Yes, put it FWD to test the front stroke. What happens is, at the front of the stroke the valve is supposed to open and let steam in to push the piston back so you should see bubbles at or near front stroke. Same for the back stroke. Actually it doesn't matter where the J bar is. One principal of a...

Re: Reverse is fine, no forward

A quick way to check the timing is to attach rubber tubes to your cyl cocks and stick the tubes into a jar of water. Now put about 10 or 20# pressure in the boiler and slowly roll the engine forward. At front piston stroke you should see bubbles from the front cyl cock. At rear piston stroke you sho...

Re: A Long Term Project

Very nicely done Steve. The spring buffers were never used on the working Hunslets nor did they have cabs. That would make your design a Preservation engine as all that was added for their present working.
Is this a 4" scale engine?

Re: Limited room for steam.

I face a similar situation with a high crown sheet and limited steam volume. In my Build log there is a discussion of solutions builders have made: http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=106308&start=12 Look at the lower half of that page and beyond for some pictures and drawings ...
