Re: Degassing aluminum

I have never used the green sands but believe that the petro bond sands are far superior. Not trying to get off topic here, but I don't think that I have ever vented a casting using petro bond sand (well I did initially and tried it without and got the same end result). I can't remember the rule of ...

Re: Degassing aluminum

I am assuming that the flux that I was using was chlorine. It was in a powdered form and was in a plastic bag. The bag had actually disintigrated and the powder went onto a particle board shelf. Well, long story short; it actually ate up the particle board; also, it was very corrosive to the crucibl...

Re: Degassing aluminum

I am planning on putting reduced atmoshperes in place. I actually have a dynarad tester and recently bought a rats 401. I am trying to get into casting on a larger scale and figure that when I get the rotary degasser in that having testing equipment and degassing equipment will be a selling point. I...

Re: Degassing aluminum

I wonder which gas would work. I hear a tale of a 75/25 nitrogen argon that they say works good and I wonder if that's what I should use. I have been told that a 16 crucible should not need degassing. I am fixing to crank up some larger furnaces, putting a steel pot in one, putting the rats unit in ...

Re: Degassing aluminum

That was some very good information ghorn. I have basically taught myself how to do foundry work through books and what not. My grandfather taught me some when he was alive (he worked in a foundry for a textile mill mainly doing iron). Casting is something I enjoy; it gives me an escape from the rou...

Re: Degassing aluminum

I degas mine with argon; the lance is galvanized steel pipe with the end welded shut and a nipple on the other end. I have small holes drilled in the end for the gas to flow through. I stay away from flux powders as they were eating the silicon carbide pots. I believe in larger spurs as the larger a...

Degassing aluminum

I have recently bought a rats unit to test aluminum for hydrogen porosity and am fixing to get a rotary degasser. I realize that this is probably a waste of money but am looking to get into casting on a larger scale and think that this would be a selling point(all about quality control). Is this a w...

Re: Medium high expansion plaster

It is used in pattermaking to allow for expansion on a casting. Ie; you use the plaster to mold off of the casting and it is somewhat oversize once it hardens.

Re: Medium high expansion plaster

Found it finally, guys. A place in Charlotte will sell you individual bags for 34 bucks a bag. Better than buying a pallet at a time right?

Medium high expansion plaster

I need a bag of medium high expansion plaster and don't know where to find it. Well actually I did find some but I really don't need 40 bags of it. Does anyone know of a place that would sell me 1 or 2 ? I don't need a whole skid(I mean really who would?)

Re: l tec 150 question

I haven't checked this out although the guy I got it from said he had wired it for 220. As usual I can't get one thing done before I have to do 10 other things; I am working tomorrow but I might check it out on Saturday. Don't know where I can get a 50 horse motor from reasonable do you anyone?
