Re: Dressing a Milling Machine table

Yes, the indicator is in a spindle mounted collet. Tommorow, I'll double check the base ways against the movement if the saddle; try to determine if the ways slope up towards the column, or if the saddle itself is bucking up as it moves.

Re: Unwanted Table Movement

I'm beginning to think a tooling plate is a good idea too.

Unwanted Table Movement

I've leveled the mill with a Starret #98 machinist level. Its in Tram, and a slight "nod" was corrected by tightening the gib on the Z axis. I've confirmed that the table is raising as it moves along the Y axis towards the column. This was measured from an indicator in the spindle, an indi...

Re: Flatness tolerances

A tooling plate is a very good option indeed. I thought about machining a plate to place my vise on, and hopefully this will help.

It's not a knee mill. It's an IH Clone

Dressing a Milling Machine table

Hi Everyone, I've done some reading about dressing a milling machine table. Does anyone ever have a good reason to do a light pass with a flycutter on their table? What reasons would this be? My table seems to travel slightly upwards as I move it on the Y axis towards the column. When I measure a cu...

Re: Flatness tolerances

Hi again, The numbers I got were from dividing the error by the length of travel. Pete brought up a very good point: I should test this on a granite block. I have, and there is a problem. This little exercise is to help me figure out the problem. Although my table is flat and dressed, it seems to mo...

Re: Flatness tolerances

Hi again, Just to clarify, I am measuring flatness of the bottom of the cut path, from an indicator mounted in a collet in the spindle. I've corrected things a little more for this little experiment. I tightened the gibs, and locked the opposite axis when cutting fury the X and then the Y. The head ...

Re: Flatness tolerances

I was cutting 1" thick cold roll steel with a face mill. I was cutting .001 off the surface, and I wasn't using coolant.

Flatness tolerances

Hi Guys, I've been working on fine tuning my mill, and I'm concerned about flatness tolerances. So far, here's what I got: X axis- +\- .0005 ~ inch Y axis- +\- .0003 ~ inch I don't know if I'm communicating this properly. When I cut a surface on my x axis, there is a variation of .0005 per inch (one...

Re: New Milling Machine

...z axis, yes.

There are some sweet preset programs on the DRO for cutting curved surfaces, and having the z in the actual quill will allow me to do these things (with the micro depth adjustment)

New Milling Machine

I havn't been around lately....I've been setting up my new milling machine and DRO :D Enter the MTW001 IH mill clone. Purchased from Machine Tools Warehouse, and features a self installed DRO. I hooked the DRO X axis directly to the quill. I don't intend on tilting the head anyway, and this will all...
