EMD F7 in SCALE

EMD F7 in SCALE ———————————————— In order to model something you need to know something about that something. So my first step after deciding to model an F7 was to learn as much as I could about it. I wasn't exactly ignorant of what goes on inside a locomotive, but I did need specifics that would a...

Re: Scaling Horsepower

How are you calculating 1645HP from 3.9HP in the scale locomotive? My understanding is that power should be to the 4th power of the scale, 7.5^4 for 1.6" scale or 8^4 for 1.5". I had calculated ~1hp input to a hydraulic pump as appropriate for a 2000HP model. I've long used the mass ratio n^3 (wher...

Re: Scaling Horsepower

One thing I have noted in particular for the gas/hydraulic gas/electric locomotives is that the prime mover horsepower rating is typically grossly over what the scale would call for. I use a 16 HP Briggs V-twin in my F7, with "full throttle" being 2400 RPM, and idle at 1000 RPM. According to the SA...

Are you implying that those who were burned by Mr. Snippe had that happen to them because of personalities?

Have tried giving it a couple of light taps with a brass mallet? It just be jammed against a stop.

EMD F7 in SCALE

EMD F7 in SCALE ———————————————— This topic will chronicle some of my experiences in bringing a 1.6 inch scale EMD F7 Diesel-Electric locomotive from a whole lot of thoughts, sketches and drawings to the state of being a running model. This project has taken me far longer than expected—I've built c...

Re: S-4 Fest

I thought this forum was about Riding Scale Railroading and not, problems with suppliers. Problems with suppliers is information that is as important to this hobby as how to model the stove pipe on a caboose or fix a recalcitrant injector on a steam locomotive. The hope is that anyone who is in the...

Re: S-4 Fest

Bill, built and delivered the trucks under your locomotive. That you did, although I ended up having to scrap the bolsters and make new ones because the traction motor mounting brackets were too low and would occasionally scrape the railhead when going through turnouts and diamonds. I have since ma...

Re: I will still wear safety glasses

I still have a skid mark where a 1/2 inch end mill ricocheted off my chest. I was cutting a shallow slot into a piece of grey cast iron when the mill apparently hit a hard spot and decided to break. It made a beeline for my chest and, of course, the nice sharp corners of the cutting end arrived firs...

Re: Converting 440v mill to 220v

I've been looking at old big iron mills recently, specifically Van Norman 22L's. At least one of these has 440v power. What would it take to convert a 440v electric motor and drive system to 220v? Is this at all feasible??? I have 220 single phase and 3phase available in my shop. Might there be som...

Re: GE 23 ton boxcab in 7.5" gauge / 1.5" scale

How about chain sizes? I see a lot of the motors in this size range come with a small #25 sprocket. Any reason not to stick with that through the whole drivetrain? Number 25 is essentially bicycle chain, and is meant for low speed, moderate torque applications. I'd use the next size up, number 35. ...
