Re: Mid-South In Sept. - Tender

Thanks Alan. I am going to mock up both before I go much further. The original coal bunker is only 11" x 6 1/4", so that makes a big difference on room to be able to handle the shovel and I would think get low enough to manipulate the poker around in the firebox. We'll be available on that Friday to...

Re: Mid-South In Sept. - Help me Unka Jesse

Thanks Alan, I did build the frame to the ten wheeler length on the prints. I wondered what was different about the overall appearance of your loco, but couldn't put my finger on it. I am doing most everything by the print with only changes I am very comfortable with, as I know it is a proven design...

Re: Mid-South In Sept. - Help me Unka Jesse

Unka (ever the generous information giver) Jesse, Thanks for the tips. I may see about a quickie mod for the front of the frame to hold a coupler if possible. This is the first thing I have put on the rails and am interested in making sure it works with some load behind it also. There is no sheet me...

Re: Mid-South In Sept. - Help me Unka Jesse

Alan, I have only the frame done and working on the trucks. I did buy Gene's archbar castings and am going to assemble them per the print and I am already considering changing to ball bearings, but the journal boxes are so small. Has anybody had any experience converting these? I have started collec...

Re: Mid-South In Sept. - Help me Unka Jesse

Thanks, I have been reading this board for a while and feel like I know most of you, but I sit back and quietly read the posts for the most part, but find all sorts of useful information in between all the fun. One thing I have found is that 99% of live steamers are kind, friendly helpful people who...

Re: Mid-South In Sept. - Help me Unka Jesse

Thanks Andy! We (My 2 boys and I) have gone on a Friday for the last 2 years and have had a great time. They can play on that huge castle playset there for hours. The only problem is that without talking to members and arranging rides that way, the boys are stuck waiting in many hour long lines - pa...

Mid-South In Sept. - Help me Unka Jesse

Jesse, Maybe you can help. I am building an Allen ten wheeler and am trying to get my tender trucks and tender frame ready to bring to Mid-South. I went to the web site and it is gone! Server down maybe? Anyway, the question is, How or who does one need to contact to find out about registering? and ...

Re: What's your "worst" job? - Machining Axleboxes?

I am going to say my axle boxes were not the worst job, but the stupidist!!! I proceeded to not look at the print very closely and bore all 6 boxes for my ten wheeler on the wrong side. the flange and bore for the needle bearing goes on the inside of the frame!!!! 6 bad, and after new stock and much...

Re: Live Steaming Password?????

I have this same problem with my home P.C., but not from work. It must have something to do with where the originating server is and what it's access rights are. Pretty strange.

Re: Coal burners make smoke?

Heck, I just bought a 100yr old house in January within 2 blocks of a N.S. branchline here in Ga. just to see and hear some trains!!! I could only wish and dream to have steam - not to mention coal burning steam running on it!!!! My vote is WAH! The problem is like you say, enough people complain an...

Re: Crankpin Hole Correction Help

I did this same method except the little stubby that was bolted to the mill table already had a key in it and matching slot in the axle bore so all crankpins were spaced and quartered equally and at the same time.
