The question wither to paint or let the steel rail rust came up when we purchased the rail. We decided to paint because: 1) The volume of an object is related to cube of its dimensions, while surface area is related to the square of the dimensions. Therefore, with a rail that is 8 times smaller than...

Here is the joiner in use. I use 10-32x3/4 SS Button Head screws with an SS nut on the other side. The rail is steel and sprayed with Rustoleum 5200 series, chestnut color, paint and the joint will be painted also. I know a guy in Wisc who made his own square track bolts on a screw machine he owns, ...

SHOW & TELL

Things are rather slow on this board, it has been almost two months since anyone posted. Here is an ongoing project for "Show & Tell". Last week Tuesday, while the weather was reasonable, I poured 12 molds of Rail Joiners. Last year, I made up a match plate that produces 18 Rail Joiners which are 4-...

IMTS Report

I attended IMTS 2006 on Sunday. It's been raining for the last several days, I think attendance was down. In the 60's when I first started going to what was then called the Machine Tool Show, there were names like Monarch, Sheldon, Brown & Sharpe, etc. Today you have to be a linguist to pronounce th...

Swastika

When I first looked at those wonderful dioramas I was impressed by the great detail and craftmanship used, but as I looked again I noticed something was missing; Swastikas. A friend of mine is putting a Revelle U Boat together, and because the kit was manufactured in Germany, the law does not allow ...

IMTS

Well, it's IMTS time again. Every two years the International Manufacturing Technology Show is held at McCormick Place in Chicago. This year it's from September 6 thru September 13. I've gone to this show since the late 60's, when it was called International Machine Tool Show. In those days it was m...

I NEED A MAN!

Yes, I need a 1/8scale operator for my turntable shack! In the spring, I asked for advise on how to make corrugated sheet metal for the turntable shack I wanted to make. I received a lot of good advice and decided to make aluminum castings for durability. I made up a pattern in maple and then cast t...

In the 1960's, we got the erection drawings for the C&NW H-1 4-8-4 from Robert Jantz. He had worked as a draftsman for the C&NW. There was no tender drawing. My brother had gotten information from Harold Shroyer, the inventor of "Lost Foam". So we decided to use that method for most castings. As I m...

Tender Trucks

About 22 years ago, from a Railroad Artist/RR enthusiast named Barton Davis, I was able to copy a set of drawings for the N&W’s J 4-8-4. One of the drawings, G42896, was of the six wheel tender truck. This drawing referenced the General Steel Castings Commonwealth Tender Truck drawing #55167E. This ...

Diesel lovers here is a photo of a "Cow and Calf" that I super detailed. When it came from the company located in the Oregon, it had "P..P.." detail, so I tore it down and rebuilt it. Below is the letter I sent to the company after I had finished. Those two headlights were done in "Lost Foam". Mr. S...
