I agree with RT. The elements of my SS superheater extend the full length of the firebox with no overheating issues in 8 years of operation. These are also known as fusible plugs. Installed in the crown sheet, the low temperature alloy melts if the sheet becomes overheated due to low water. It blows out and extinguishes the fire.

That's jack screws and spring wedges are two ways handling adjustments are made in NASCAR.

On my Northern I have the elements run to with an inch of the backhead.

Steam oil is introduced after the elements, into the branch pipes.

The museum in Ottawa was closed a couple of years ago due to mould contamination. I hear they plan to construct a new building in the future.
