FL visit

I'll be there maning a table on Saturday with issues to puruse through, so please drop by. Probably easier to find me than you, since I don't have a picture but will still try. What lokie will you have (if any)? If I'm not at the table, you can ID me with the "Golden Gate Live Steamers" t-shirt (don...

FL Meets

Upside: I finally got the OK to go to Ridge and the first couple hours of Largo from the wife.

Downside: My flight home will take me 10 1/2 hours though...UGH!

Looking forward to meeting all you guys. Stop by and say Hi!

Wheel Forming

I use a method using three different tools, and file the flanges to finish. The radius on the outside is mostly so you don't pick the points and frogs and to reduce rail wear. The issue of The Home Railway Journal on the printer right now describes this process, developed by John Bailie. It is a pro...

Wheel Standards

Wow. I had no idea that I was starting such a firestorm. That was surely not my intent. First, whether or not the wheel standards were "formally" adopted or not, so many clubs in the US (especially western US) use them they have become defacto standards. Yes, some clubs use other dimensions, and you...

Tough Choices

Looking at Manatee, Ridge, and Largo, which is the best to attend? I can probably only go to one (time reasons). Also, does Manatee have 4 3/4" guage and how much?

I have to make a plan before I go to the executive committee (of one, but she's important) to get permission.

Anyone who wants view it can find it at http://www.homerailwayjournal.com/wheels and also download it at the same page. Matt Mason Editor The Home Railway Journal www.h...

So sad to hear

Don was a nice guy. Every time I talked on the phone with him, it would last far longer than I had planned. I never regretted the extra time. I will miss our chats.

Luckliy, Bob is just as committed to KLW and he is just as great to converse with.

I'm Soooooooo Open to One!

If someone has an idea, I would LOVE to talk. Between editing, designing, writing reviews, and marketing the magazine, I have a lot of time into it already and don't have the spare time to write a construction series myself and do my day job...the one that pays the bills and keeps the wife happy. Bu...

Topic Getting Old.....

I'm sorry, but I must point out a few new things out that directly take on some of the points presented. "[If] not all can afford the larger equipment, so be it." A great way to make sure the hobby can be only for the rich and retired, which is a sure-fire way to keep the hobby going....right??? I m...

Scales and Choices

OK, I've seen my name come up twice now, so thought I would chime in. I do have a 1" scale home railway, and that was the start of The Home Railway Journal. (Side note for subscribers, the next issue it is at the printer now.) Many, if not most, home railways are 1" scale or smaller. But there is a ...

Blowdowns

Hey Mike, Bob's blowdowns at RR Warehouse are really nice. They are more work than they cost, and Bob does a good job lapping them for a good, solid joint. Another option is to simply use 1/4" ball valves. I have them on my clhoe and they work great. I am using them on my Coles 0-4-0 as well. They d...
