Re: I have approached the artillery issue from the ...

George, I have some pics of a beautiful barrel, one of two, that sit in front of one of the buildings at Fort Lewis. They are like the ones I mentioned, brass cannon from Spain, dated in the late 1700's. The workmanship in the barrels is hard to believe. They are truly a work of art. In the future I...

George, Don't let money stop you from retiring! Think of all the great stuff you can do without a job to take up your time. Re: Graziano

Peter, I was pleasantly surprised to receive an almost immediate response from Clausing. All I did is ask if they were able to provide me with a source. Their response was that they are the distributor in the US for Gamet and are able to provide the bearings. I've sent the specifications and am awai...

Re: Graziano

Thanks, Peter. I've managed to find Colchester and have inquired of the availability of Gamet bearings. Interestingly, there are no direct hits on Gamet when running a search. It might be difficult to get them in the US.

Re: Bent spindle ? Graziano

Jim, Strange that you haven't made contact with my Utah friend. Makes me wonder if I provided his home phone number or the shop, which is now run by his sons. If you'd like me to contact him I'd be willing. I must apologize to you for forgetting that you and I had talked about your lathe some time a...

Re: Calling Harold V - 50Kw induction furnace

Andrew, The coil is copper tubing, wound in a helix, with the refractory acting as the insulator for the 400 V we have discussed, and, of course, is water cooled. The water consumption of the entire unit is about 9 gallons/minute, and is recommended to not be cold, which causes considerable condensa...

Re: New Found Respect for Die makers!

Jacin, I'm not sure there is a tool steel that is rated for welding. There's a few problems associated with welding on heat treatable materials. I did have one experience that had good results, however. In the early 60's, while I was employed at Sperry, using 52100 steel, I made three sets of superc...

Re: Calling Harold V - 50Kw induction furnace

Andrew, You're a real sucker for punishment. OK, the story begins with my visit to a government surplus yard some time ago, when I resided in Utah. Interestingly, had I been aware, I attended the auction in which the induction furnace was sold, but ...

Re: Calling Harold V - 50Kw induction furnace

Hi Andrew, I'm not sure the story about how the furnace came to me would make great reading, but I can describe in some detail the furnace and power supply. Fortunately, while we don't own our own hydro-electric dam, we do live near them! The unit, ...

Re: Casting Ruler

Roy,

What more can you tell us about the spray putty filler? I've not heard of it. Does it sand well? Cure time? Solvent type?

I'll try to check it out when we get to town next time, but meantime, anything you could provide would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Harold

Re: Graziano / Gamet bearings

Thanks, Andrew. That's exactly how it's set up. They make mention of that as a means of controlling spindle expansion, which certainly must be severe considering the heating of the headstock and the length of the spindle. Now the question is will it accommodate the front bearing adjustment without c...
