Re: The home shop machinist, health of the hobby

AllenH59--

That is a great story! Congratulations!

As a former college dean, I often employed outside help in such manner. Doing so brought fresh ideas into the academic community; ideas are the lifeblood of academia.

Way-cool on you!

Re: OT: Building in isolated location

pete-- Thank you for the detailed guidance. I'm glad it's in this thread . . . I won't have to remember where to look for it. The mill's table is lowered all the way and the head is rotated 90*. The mill is now configured for as low a center of gravity as possible. Plus, like the lathe (and saws), t...

Re: OT: Building in isolated location

Pete-- There will be plenty of tie down straps, for sure. I'll also screw lumber around the pallets to the deck of my trailer to prevent them from shifting. I'll be back here for all the advice I can get when I see exactly how the equipment has been palatalized. I have seen enough of it to know the ...

Re: OT: Building in isolated location

All-- Ok. Its been a while since I last posted. All is good. The house has been finished for quite some time. I am working in the garage in the areas dedicated to the hallway leading from the garage into the house, full bath (#5), the laundry and--most importantly!--my shop. Structurally, its all do...

Re: The home shop machinist, health of the hobby

All-- Here's the deal: Do you think it safe to say most of the members of this forum belong to the last two generations? Those generations, especially the last one, are resistant to change. That's natural and the way it should be. It's always been like that since it's Nature's way of making the coll...

SteveHGraham-- Re: "It can teach you music theory and calculus." It can teach you calculus??? I had enough of that long, long ago! But just in case my smartphone shows signs of teaching me integration or derivatives or Fourier analysis, I'm throwing that baby in the trash and buying a flip phone! I ...

Re: The home shop machinist, health of the hobby

All-- What liveaboard said. At the same time, I am worried about what rubenT said. SteveHGraham hit it out of the park with his comments about some folks. I have a niece that fits that description to a T. What will happen? I don't know. But I do know This, too, shall pass . --Bill ps A couple of mon...

Re: Needing a gear

Dave-- I love the word " wallered ." I grew up in the deep south on the Texas Gulf Coast. A lot of stuff got wallered out down there. When I moved to the midwest, I used the term as in 'just waller it out a little . . . then it'll fit'. I'll look back in on this thread to find out how the ice cream ...
