Re: Low water mark

Where is your crownsheet? Low water mark should be at least 1/2" above the highest point of the crown on your steepest grade.

Re: Oil burning boiler mods

What diameter are you looking at? For a 1" OD tube I use SA 178, 12 or 13 gauge, but it's getting hard to find. SA 178 is a welded tube, annealed after welding - for a seamless tube the spec is SA 192.

Re: Bagley burner install

The burner should be installed at the front of the firing pan. It should be aimed to hit the door sheet (back firebox sheet) below the fire door. This area should have firebrick or refractory cement. The firing pan should be covered for the front 2/3.

Re: Which steam pump would you build?

The pump drawings Allen Models used to sell are the VanBrocklin pump.
They are now available from Friends Models.

Re: Driver machining order

Before I do any machining on spoked wheels I paint them. You can get a good heavy coat on the spokes, then a nice thin coat on the machined surfaces after they are machined.

Some pictures from the meet.
I didn't get this guy's name, but this sure looks like Ken Stemen's old Pacific.

Re: 730 Old Boiler Dissection

As far as condemning limits, I seem to remember that a loss of 40% of the original thickness indicates that replacement is warranted. I suppose you’d need to consider the original factor of safety too. Maybe Marty can correct me on this? FRA regulation (CFR49:230.33) states: Wasted sheets shall not...

Re: NJLS Fall Meet

Here's something you don't see very often, a steam/diesel tripleheader in 1.5" scale! That's Dan's Hudson triple heading with my F's on Saturday of the meet. And yes, the F's were being controlled from the cab of the Hudson, made possible by the R/C control system I recently installed on the F's. W...

Re: 730 Old Boiler Dissection

Back when I was working at a certain railroad supply manufacturer, we would advise the users of steam generators in hard water areas to occasionally run a solution of sulfamic acid (H 3 NSO 3 ) and water through the coils. This procedure was generally quite effective in removing scale, and would no...

Re: NJLS Fall Meet

I am planning on being there. I have two boilers to deliver, and I'm bringing my 3 1/2" gauge Atlantic. I have some work to do so I can run it.
