Re: Father & Sons build project: Fitchburg Northern (2.5" scale, 7.5" gauge)

I like your fixture for turning the radius on the rod ends. Faster than a rotary table. True, that, but with risks. Unless stops are set, it's very easy to undercut, and if one attempts to climb mill, things can get interesting very quickly. H I can't take credit for that fixture, it is John Bailie...

Re: Father & Sons build project: Fitchburg Northern (2.5" scale, 7.5" gauge)

Just a couple more pictures of the boys - Eli milling, and Paul marking out his cut for the pedestal opening. IMG_2842.JPG IMG_2838.JPG Also a picture of the frames halfway through - we separated them (they had been pinned together) for these operations, so you can see one frame that has been cut, a...

Re: Father & Sons build project: Fitchburg Northern (2.5" scale, 7.5" gauge)

Going to John's results in "homework" for the boys and I to accomplish in our meager shop at home. I have the equivalent of a Grizzly Mill-Drill, a 9" Southbend lathe, and assorted other items that help us in our quest for our coal-fired steam locomotive. Now that the pedestals have been drilled to ...

Golden Gate Live Steamers - 2018 Fall Meet

The boys and I visited Golden Gate Live Steamers in Tilden Park for their Fall Meet on September 23, 2018. They spent a lot of time operating John Bailie's heavily modified "Chloe" #3 which is a coal-fired 7.5" gauge (2.5" scale) locomotive. There were a number of other trains operating throughout t...

Re: Father & Sons build project: Fitchburg Northern (2.5" scale, 7.5" gauge)

Thanks for your comment and encouragement, Dave. We are having fun and learning together at the same time. On the previous post, I neglected to include the photo of the frames as the chain-drilled sections were removed. IMG_8485.JPG IMG_E8486.JPG Back at John's, we milled the top and bottom edges of...

Re: Father & Sons build project: Fitchburg Northern (2.5" scale, 7.5" gauge)

Before heading back to John's, there were a few more things that needed to be done. We had to go back and knock through all the webs between the drill holes. It was a tedious, but effective method for opening the holes. Eli is seen doing that work. IMG_2720 copy.jpg And the boys showing the complete...

Paul helped with the drilling.

Eli also helped with the drilling.

A milestone - one month after the project restarted, we had a good start on locomotive frames!

Re: Father & Sons build project: Fitchburg Northern (2.5" scale, 7.5" gauge)

After leaving John's, my first stop was to Joe's for some bandsaw work. I have a HF horizontal bandsaw that can do some small vertical work, but the frames are a bit much for my machine. Joe's machine with the big table made quick work of some long cuts. IMG_2666.JPG IMG_2665.JPG IMG_2669.JPG From J...

Re: Father & Sons build project: Fitchburg Northern (2.5" scale, 7.5" gauge)

Gentlemen: thank you for your words of encouragement. My boys really seem to be enjoying the work! Next step was taking the material that had been sawed at home by Eli and Paul to John's shop. There I drilled the pedestal binders for the fasteners that will eventually hold them to the bottom of the ...

Father & Sons build project: Fitchburg Northern (2.5" scale, 7.5" gauge)

On August 4th, 2018 I met with my friend, John Bailie, to discuss restarting a locomotive build he had been helping me with several years ago. The build - Fitchburg Northern - originally started in October of 2002. I got as far as the boiler, drivers, axles, eccentrics, bearing boxes, crank pins and...
