Re: Clutch / Shear pin for Smithy Midas ?

I was about to say no, as I have managed to avoid crashing since. But then I remembered that my son managed to shear one (the feed screw dowel, IIRC) as part of his learning process.

Re: Clutch / Shear pin for Smithy Midas ?

I put shear pins on after a couple of, um, learning opportunities. I replaced the pin for the feed screw with a brass dowel and I made brass keys for the change gears.

I also learned not to crash, so I really haven't tested them thoroughly. But they haven't caused me any problems.

Re: I think my drill head is jammed

If I look at your picture closely, it appears there is some slotted hole peaking out on the left of the washers on at least two of the motor bolts. Loosening the bolts and then loosening the big black adjuster bolt -- as already mentioned by spro and Harold -- should gain you some slack. If this mac...

Re: Installing a wedge QCTP on the HQ800V

Spro,- Sorry, sometimes my sense of humour is a bit obscure. My bad. Let me explain: The ultimate test of the metal would be to apply increasing stress until it deforms or breaks. Hence "I hope to hell I don't test the strength of the metal", meaning I hope not to break or deform it. The 'parable of...

Re: Installing a wedge QCTP on the HQ800V

I am but one little voice here and not able to test the strength of your particular compound metal. I hope to hell I don't test the strength of the metal either!!! I made these mods a few years ago. All I can do is quote the immortal words of the guy who fell off the roof of a 20 story office...

Re: Installing a wedge QCTP on the HQ800V

I'm losing it now but if you are talking Tee slot, it should be full length with a few threaded holes along the length. I would never present a small T nut into the compound. The pressure to secure the tool post and in work can fracture it. Spro, Thanks for your words of caution. The adapter plate ...

Re: Installing a wedge QCTP on the HQ800V

I didn't recall, but I just went out and measured. It's 0.550" thick. If I was making it again today I'd go a bit thicker though -- up to 0.750". It's Ok for 1/2" and 3/8" bits, but a touch low for 1/4" bits.

That looks like the same one I have. Note that I made further modifications later on, as documented in this thread:

Re: Issues with DRO on Midas 1220 LTD

Do you ever have issues with coolant or chips on yours in the front ? No, it's been fine. Mind you, I am using a glass scale with a double lip seal mounted so the read head on the underside. Pretty hard for anything to get at it. https://picturehosting.verhey.org/hq800v/Y-scale.jpg The other advant...

Re: Issues with DRO on Midas 1220 LTD

Funny. I started with my glass scale on the tailstock side, and moved it to the chuck side. I don't have to extend the tailstock as far to reach over it.

I also have an aluminium angle guard over things.
