Phill,
Is that what I would call a balanced regulator?

Re: Copper Boiler Fastners?
Reed, To specifically answer your question, you can (although I agree - NO brass in boilers) but I see two potential problems. First the melting point of brass and silver solder aren't all that far apart and if you should accidentally allow a joint to overheat there's a good chance the brass will me...

Re: Copper Boiler Fastners?
Reed, I can't say that I've experienced the problem you describe, at least to the extent that it would keep from using S-brz screws if needed but I don't screw my boilers to achieve mechanical strength anyway, the solder provides that. Instead, for a number of reasons, what I do is fit and pre-assem...

All of those sorts of things pale in comparison to what was once printed on American Airlines snack peanuts:
Instructions:
1. Open Bag
2. Eat

Re: 0-4-0 Projects
Will, The Double TICH is just that . . . a 3-1/2"ga TICH, doubled, with the expected adjustments in details in boiler and running gear, although I've read that it is indeed a straight doubling so you make a lot of progress by simply doubling the LBSC drawings and applying typical practice elsew...

Re: 0-4-0 Projects
Will, I was going to remind you of (but not necessarily recommend) the TICH, which is available doubled to 7.5" ga, but John beat me to it. I'm building one now but I hesistate to "recommend" it only because although one could be Americanized I'm not sure the results would be satisfac...

Re: Flexible Grinder Shaft Expriences/Opinions
Thanks for the information. I've seen the kind of buffer setup you describe in auto body and sheet metal shops. I think that setup is called a "gimbal" mount.

Flexible Grinder Shaft Expriences/Opinions
I occasionally need a pretty stout hand-held buffer and so far have made-do with 3M-ite wheels in a large hand drill but I now have a spare 3/4hp/3450rpm x 5/8" shaft available and wondered what, if anything, is available in a hand-held flex shaft attachment. What experiences or recommendations...

Re: A Peek Inside . . . . .
I was told that copper was the opposite of steel. When you got it hot and quenched it that it would be soft. When copper is heated and allowed to cool slowly it got hard. My teaching and personal experience is that the rate of cooling doesn't matter, copper heated to beyond it's critical temperatur...

Re: boiler question
Pete, As you can see from my previous posting I am a copper boiler guy and can't claim to know all that much about steel but IMHO 10ga is not thick enough for shell or heads. Yes 10ga would certainly handle the proposed working pressure but it wouldn't afford a sufficient safety factor and no corros...

Re: A Peek Inside . . . . .
John,
If I've done the calculation right, assuming a cold temp of 75°F and a hot temp of 375°F (100psi = 341°F) the expansion will be less than 1/32" in a connected length of 10.25". The actually number is .029".
