Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

I'm not at all knocking HSS. I run it almost exclusively on four of my lathes. Learning to sharpen it properly is a foundation skill as far as I'm concerned. I can free hand it, though I was taught by a very old, very grumpy and very frugal scostman. If you need a guide or rest, no drama at all, the...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

At this point I only use insert style tooling on my lathes. The problem is there are so many different types of inserts depending on the material to be cut, how hard it is, etc. Mind you I do this for a living and factor the costs of inserts into the job. For the hobbyist it can get rather expensiv...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

And what is the cost difference between a Vertical mill and Lathe of comparable work envelope? I would think that a knee mill would be much more expensive.

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

Oh, boy. Now we are getting into emotion and bordering on personal attacks. Not really what this forum is about. There was no personal attack. Your position would indicate, as I stated (even with an exclamation point) that you don't realise the full utility of a lathe. I even called you sir. Try pi...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

I realise I'm late to the party, but I'll have at it anyway! I'll second the "get a lathe first" - Doubters, you just try making a lathe with your mill... You will have to have a threading dial if you want to thread. The only thing I've ever used a threading dial for is a four-start thread...

Re: Apple Mac laptop

I get all that, and to each their own. We all choose what we're comfortable with. If you're happy accepting the risks running things with known vulnerabilities (not to mention putting up with ads, and feeding the AI algorithms) then I would be the last guy to try and stop you. I can't even credit wh...

Quite right. I hate poorly coded sites. Worse are the ones that serve a "mobile friendly" version with no option to switch.

Re: Apple Mac laptop

"Youtube etc wont work obviously." In other words, you can pretty much forget about using the Internet, unless you want to take measures most people will never be sophisticated enough to take. There are more websites than youtube you know? In fact I probably only watch maybe a half dozen ...

If you disable Flash, you can pretty much forget about using the Internet. I have considered getting a Mac because supposedly, working with video is much faster. Still true? To the first: Not at all. One of my favourite browsers is W3M https://www.google.com/search?q=w3m+screens Youtube etc wont wo...

Re: Engine Cleaner (exterior)

Not specific to locos, but vehicles, engines and things outside...
Diesel and 2-stroke mix. About 70:30. The petrol cuts grease then evaporates off, the diesel and oil leave a protective coat.
Fisholene or Lanolin work as well.
