Re: Building the 2.5" Scale Shay

Got the mill fixed today :D It still needs to be trammed, but all of our machines are functional again. We replaced the top of the gib like Brian recommended after several other recommendations to do it that way. I meant to take some pictures of the gib, but we got caught up in the moment and had it...

Re: PVLS Fathers Day Meet

When Murray and I go to the MLS meet, I order all our food as Murray don't speak de French. Problem is I only know pomme de tarre and poivre. Makes for a dull meal. Don't forget: a la mode! Except for the fact that "a la mode" is an American saying that translates from French to "has...

Re: Building the 2.5" Scale Shay

Not much done today, spent most of it out running errands. I was greeted by a mini Christmas when I did get home though. My clevises from Midwest Control Products came followed by box from Travers with various tools, including a buffing wheel and rouge to polish some stainless steel I have, with a l...

Re: Building the 2.5" Scale Shay

The epoxy just needs to hold long enough for us to drill and tap the two pieces together, then they will be screwed to each other. Dianne, neither of us have any experience gas welding with oxy-acetylene so we'd have to find someone around us who did. Brian, the only problem with your idea is that I...

Re: Building the 2.5" Scale Shay

Thanks Redneck! My dad was thinking of using epoxy to reattach the piece and then drill and tap the two together and then add a screw to keep it from coming apart again. This should work, right?

Re: Big Boots June Meet Picture

Looks like y'all had fun! Wish I was out there with you guys, especially since my mill just rendered itself useless today (go see my build thread for more info). Kap, John's shay is a beauty to run, even if it sounds like its full of bees. Being and east coast purest, mine's going to be coal fired, ...

Re: Building the 2.5" Scale Shay

Got the gib out. Now the mill is completely out of commission. IMG_0337.JPG Here's where it broke. This is what need to be welded back. The gib is about 1/2" thick here and the broken piece is about as long and wide. IMG_0339.JPG Luckily I have stock piled enough other parts that I can work on ...

Re: Building the 2.5" Scale Shay

Bad news :( The gib in the knee on my Bridgeport mill broke. The top ear for the adjusting screw cracked and gave way today. Now I need to figure out how to get the gib out of the hole and then see if it can be fixed. I know that cast iron can be welded, but should not be MIG welded. Anyone have any...

Re: Building the 2.5" Scale Shay

Thanks Brian!
Maybe, that's one thing I would have to see once the brake cylinder is made. I could add the spring later if I had problems or even completely switch to spring off just by plugging the steam off side of the brake valve.

Re: Building the 2.5" Scale Shay

Finished all four brake beams tonight. Now onto the levers and then the brake cylinder. Still trying to decide wether to do steam application and release like Lima did or do steam application and spring release...

Re: Building the 2.5" Scale Shay

Thanks Brian! Where did you get those cylinder cocks? Makinsmoke, I have seen Nelson's website, I'll have to go back and look at that page. Finally got brake beams going, although I broke a tap after the second one. So I now have to remake the beam, luckily I bought enough extra metal for a spare. T...
