This is not gospel but it iots what I know to be true The Little Engines "old" Northern was patterned after a UP FEF-1..the original drives, even though scale 80" had a left and right side as the were cast with lead in the counter weights just like the real ones...today only the patte...

The ones here seem to have a large enough handle to easily manipulate with gloved hands. If you machine off part of the end of the handle flat...you can turn a small wooden handle and install a 4-40 threaded stud the drill and tap the brass handle and screw it into the end...works great easy to grab...

something to think about...I will ask John about buying the tooling...I have 6 of them somewhere in my shop...I use to sell them...they are nice..but we will see what kind of demand there is for themTrainman4602 wrote:

I use and sell the ones that American Model Eng. makes...and I use them on the mikado I bought for starting valves...they work fantastic...I have some of the LS starting valves..I like them but the ball valves work so slick and don't leak

I bought the 4501 from Tom and was lead to believe that he built it and the caboose that went with it...he told me he designed the boiler and had a fellow (name escapes me) whjo did boiler work on the 4449 weld it up....as far as getting hold of Tom...lots of luck he has no phone and no computer for...

Where does this casting come from?
It may well have come from Dick's stuff...here are pictures of the one I have patterns and castings for at Little Engines..it is 2 piece and mounts to the front of the tender...it is very similar to the one in your picture
