Re: The Cass Climax Rebuild
Charles, I noticed the lack of superheater flues also, which suprised me. Note all the flexible staybolts on this boiler, it must have been a very late Climax judging by this, but seemed odd to me not to have superheaters. This obviously had to have been a late model loco with piston valves and prob...

Re: To Superheat, or Not to Superheat?
Fred, 300 series stainless seems to hold up pretty well, but I have also heard of taking the blower off the superheater, but how this was used I am not sure. The SP I understand used superheated steam back to the fireing manifold in the cab on later locos. Whether this was off the the superheater fo...

Re: To Superheat, or Not to Superheat?
Curtis, I have not seen a full sized loco that did not have the superheater down stream from the throttle regardless of a dome or smokebox throttle. Most locomotives have a butterfly dampener that when steam is not used is closed to shut off the hot gasses from traveling through the superheaterflues...

Re: To Superheat, or Not to Superheat?
Charles,
As I remember, the superheater he was using when I looked the loco over
was before the HP cylinders. I don't remember him using a reheater between
the cylinders, but then, memory does not serve me like it used to!

Re: To Superheat, or Not to Superheat?
The best example of the difference between superheat and saturated steam I have seen was watching Ken Schroders 2-4-4-2 mallet with superheat compared to another mallet that did not. Ken's engine ran with a dry stack and was very responsive for a compound. All the saturated mallet did was piss water...

Heisler gearing was/Re: Climax gear image--now O/T
All, Somewhere there is a drawing of the gear arrangement for the first 3 truck Heisler. I think it is at least in the book on the McCloud River RR, since that loco was sold to the McCloud. Two locos were known to have been made to this design, but it was not real successful. The 3rd 3 truck attempt...

Gear shaft offsets.
Charles, The shaft offset between the lineshaft and the axle is designed to be .700" as per Climax practice. I am told for the 80 ton class C Climax that they would groove the shaft and axle for clearance due to the larger shaft and axle used. Apparently Climax wanted to keep the skew to the ab...

Re: Climax Loco Wheel Spokes
Charles,
The 60, 70, and 80 ton Climax locos that I have noticed used 9 spokes. There
may be exceptions, but I have not seen them. I have not paid that much
attention to the smaller teakettles. FWIW, the Willamette used 8 spokes,
and the larger Heislers used 10.

Doug

Re: For those wanting Climax gears....
Several people were interested in the investment cast Climax skew bevel gears of which I had posted an image in April. I have emailed those who indicated an interest at that time. If anyone else wants a set, I am finally taking the molds to the foundry, and would need to hear from any others in the ...

Re: Newbie Question on Articulated Locomotives
Mike, The first url that Bruce supplied is from an early Baldwin catalog and has some design features on the frame and hinge that were short lived as they didn't work well. Figure one shows the top part of a double hinge just above the frame where the hinge enters the saddle of the high pressure cyl...

Re: FS-Winton Mogul near completion.
They are a nice looking loco, well designed, and built for stout. I aquired a
chassis for a Satuated Steam PRR Atlantic not long after I aquired this
project and just don't seem to have time for both. The Atlantic wheel
arrangment is a favorite of mine.
