Re: Which Somewhat-Cheap Box: HF, Costco, or Milwaukee?
I looked at this HF tool cart at the local store, they were bragging that it was rated the best for the money over Snap-on & all others by Truckin' Magazine... http://www.harborfreight.com/30-in-5-drawer-704-lb-capacity-glossy-red-tool-cart-69397.html Don't ask me if Truckin' mag is the definiti...

Re: Which Somewhat-Cheap Box: HF, Costco, or Milwaukee?
May be perfectly good, but I just have trouble getting excited about anything named "EXTREME" any more...talk about an over-used buzzword...right up there with groovy & awesome...:) I'd probably rip that logo off after a couple days & then it would be OK... I've seen some nice stai...

Re: Tooling
You always want to do your homework on an ebay deal...I have a holder & boring bar for a BIG shaper that I bought off ebay thinking it was a size that would fit my South Bend. When it got here I realized oops! that's not gonna work...the seller didn't use a ruler or anything for scale, but my mi...

+1 - I had better luck with windows 2K than any other system I've ever run...sad day when they quit supporting it.

Re: Tooling
They are fairly common on ebay-I have a south Bend 7", & I found a boring bar/keyway cutter holder there. You have to be careful, some ebay sellers think they're the same as a lathe holder, which, as spro just explained, they ain't...

Re: Need help with threading
The Atlas lathe manual has a chart called Double Depth of Thread, I'm sure the MH has it too, but I've used the Atlas more...shows the infeed needed to make a complete thread for all 60 * pitches, regardless of diameter.

Re: Atlas bearings
Truthfully, Earl, it's kind of a fact of life with these lathes that you have to chase chatter problems...a couple things I have found that help-one, carbide tooling with no rake is just not hardly worth trying-HSS properly ground is what the lathe likes a lot better. Discussions with Harold & o...

Re: Atlas bearings
Does it have 1/2" bedways? Looks basically like my 101.28990, other than the quick-change box & cross-feed lever.

Re: Would You Buy Used Tanks?
I think I would avoid the Horror Freight clones, although, I have no experience with them.....I'm just guessin'..... Bill Mine works fine-seems to be OK quality, for what I paid for it...(nothing). My sister gave it to me for helping her move. She had a lot of stuff she never used...cowboyfriend sh...

Re: Atlas bearings
Chatter when parting off? Welcome to the Atlas (light lathe) world...as John said, parting is no picnic, but it's a lot better with the quick-change tool post than the old lantern...(almost impossible)... And yes, .050 cut is pushing it. Ditto on the carbide w/no top rake... That run-down doesn't so...

Re: Atlas bearings
As long as you can't feel any end play or side play in the spindle, the bearings are probably tight enough. Have you checked the condition of the bearings? If they are pitted & rough, it might cause chatter. When you say the spindle rotates freely w/the belts loose, do you mean with the motor ru...
