Re: Parting with my new Valenite tool
Today, I had a problem. I am finishing the gable end of a roof that overhangs a second roof, with only about 14" of clearance. I have to work underneath, over 16" deep, nailing on vinyl trim pieces for the soffit and fascia (everything is covered, so there is no painting). With limited cl...

Parting with my new Valenite tool
I got this new Valenite VG112 R parting/grooving tool and inserts from Ebay. The inserts are 1.98mm or .078" wide. I believe the rod was 13/16" 12L14, and I was hand feeding with the lathe set to 1200 rpm's. I was just messing around, but it did cut real nice. I learned if you feed too slo...

Re: Show us your lathe!
It is SO COOL to have a knowledgeable person willing to spend time helping with a complex project. Pixman is a good guy to have "on your side". (I also admire his attention to his father, sharing their common interest and keeping Dad occupied.) That's a nice lathe, BTW ! Randy C Randy, Pi...

Re: Show us your lathe!
Here is my Harrison M300. I ended up taking the head stock, gearbox, and tailstock from my origional lathe, and put it on the parts lathe I bought....for parts. I figured out my origional lathe must have been used in production. the bed was worn in the middle, and the leadscrew had some major wear, ...

Re: Material for my cross-slide screw?
Ken, I was mostly fighting myself! I had one of the nuts backwards, and when I put it rightr the existing wedge works. I also just redrilled the hole on the gear to 6mm, that was a breeze. I had a part on the handle assembly on wrong at first also. Another problem, was the saddle strip on the cross ...

Re: Material for my cross-slide screw?
The new screw and nuts are installed on the lathe. First off Ken aka PixMan is the best! I can’t say enough good things about Ken. Ken not only invited me over his shop to make the parts, which is a huge favor in itself, but he showed me what, and why he was doing what he was doing. Ken would show m...

Re: Cutting on my lathe with carbide
Here is another video. I'll try to get the facts correct, but please cry fowl when I get something wrong, this helps me learn. I am here to learn and share. The material is a SS Ruger 10/22 barrel stub (not Ruger brand, but an aftermarket). OD of section I cut was .585" ID or barrel's bore is ....

Re: Cutting on my lathe with carbide
Harold,
The depth of cut was .075. I did not measure my work before the cut, but it does measure .600 now. I just did some fuzzy math to get the before diameter. Sorry for the mixup.

Re: Cutting on my lathe with carbide
Not too bad at all. You could've kept the feed rate up at (or above) .005ipr and you would probably have seen much better chip control. So how's the insert look now? Probably evidence of having been used, but no wear or damage. :) What diameter is that stock? (Curious what the SFM rate was.) The ch...

Re: Cutting on my lathe with carbide
I gave stainless a try. My video has no sound and not the best quality, but you get the idea. I had the lathe @ 1700 rpm's, feed @ .0025" per rev, and deph of cut was .075. I could go deeper, but I think the feed speed should have been lower for deeper cuts. At deeper cuts, the chips were comin...

Cutting on my lathe with carbide
Today while PixMan was over my home shop, we took a couple of video's of me turning some 13/16" 12L14. I used my Valenite insert tool, and with guidance from an experienced machinist it was like a hot knife on butter! I had my 13x40 M300 going 1700 rpm's and the feed was .004" per revoluti...
