Re: Cheap Tools from China....

Put another way, when share prices mean more than dividends. For good reason. Dividends are taxed at the standard rate and are paid out of after tax earnings. Capital gains are taxed at less than half that even before allowing for deferrals and such. Thus rational shareholders want corporations to ...

Re: Question about thread dial

Make a nut for your 6mm pitch leadscrew that is also a 120 tooth gear. Run it onto the leadscrew and secure it to the carriage so that it is free to turn. Mate a 127 tooth gear to it. When the half-nuts are disengaged the 127 tooth gear will rotate 4 times for each inch that the carriage would have ...

Re: Question about thread dial

I'm just going to take a guess that for imperial threading, you will then require a set of transposing gears in the drive line. These are usually 100 and 127 teeth gears (or 47/37 for close enough) when we do metric threading on an imperial lathe, so perhaps just reverse the ratio. Yes, exactly (th...

Re: Learned something about drilling today

Concerning the prick punch, I learned to scribe two intersecting lines at the hole location. Then you place a prick punch tip in one of the scribe lines and follow the scribe like a phonograph record groove until the tip drops into the intersecting scribe line. You can feel it. Then you hit with a ...

Re: Question about thread dial

If it was made for sale in Europe it wil be metric. If it was made for export to the US it might be inch (US Customary, to be precise. "Imperial" refers to the pre-metric British system).

Re: Question about thread dial

The gear needs to be the TPI times a power of 2. 32 teeth is common for 8TPI leadscrews. You then have 4 main divisions and a minor division between each pair of main divisions and you can simply follow the instructions in most "how to use a threading dial" references. I made one for my Lo...

Re: Torque at different temperatures

A five inch long head bolt would only change about a thousandth and a half in length over a fifty degree ambient temperature swing. That would be far within the acceptable stretch range. If the head is cast iron it will expand almost exactly as much as the steel bolt so there will be no significant...

Re: Torque at different temperatures

These are things we wonder about. A very cold iron block outside, and an aluminum head with new bolts. The head, gasket and bolts are at least 50 degree warmer than the block. Sure there is a raise of temperature around the block with lighting and bodies holding and breathing. Under a hood with a ta...
