Re: Two Silver Soldering Questions

That sounds like nonsense to me and is the opposite what mechanical Standards say! For example, in ISO tolerances for shafts class h6 the tolerances are: Ø3mm +0 -6 so 2.994 to 3.000 mm is okay Ø20mm +0 -13 so 19.987 to 20.000 mm is okay Ø100mm +0 -22 so 99.978 to 100.000 is okay It's obvious that t...

Re: Two Silver Soldering Questions

for many, +/- 0.01" is considered within tolerances..remember you are building a loco not a watch. Hi, that may be correct, but I think it depends on the scale of the build. I'm currently building some 10.25" rolling stock and in one of my drawings I have specified a tolerance of ±0.15 mm...

Re: Beryllium copper

According to actual Safety Data Sheets in the EU, drilling, milling and turning is no risk. Every grinding or sanding is dangerous and requires safety measures, which are probably impracticable in a home shop. Welding and soldering are dangerous because toxic fumes can develop, as is by any heat Tre...

Re: Cast iron ate my drill

Hopefully the inner part of the ring isnt as hard because Ill need to tap that for the door dogs Hi Tristan, just Keep the tap away from the hard spot. 1. Machine a large chamfer at that hole, larger Diameter bigger than tap Diameter. 2. Or use an endmill or drill bit with Diameter larger than tap ...

Re: Steel wheel tires - welding?

@Cary I took the drops and outsides with me last time. The round drops are useful for smaller wheels; other live steamers might be interested in them too. The odd shaped outside residues are less attractive. They are only useful after a lot of cutting, and for me the only working method to cut them ...

Re: Steel wheel tires - welding?

I'm still not sure whethers its worth the effort to try welding rolled flat bar.
Seems to be the cheap route here.

Anyone with poor experience in this forum on welded wheel tires?

Re: Steel wheel tires - welding?

Hi cbrew, I will send them an email. phone calls by handy to the states aren't cheap here too. I general its my experience that any ordering in the states is way too ineffective because of high shipping rates. A 0.1 kg part from Germany with poastal service is ~4.30 €, from US to Germany you pay mor...

Re: Steel wheel tires - welding?

I have also ordered rings from Speedy metal and never seen any "specialty fee". unless they will not ship to Germany, it may be the best way to go. the second choice would be to have blanks laser cut from A36 plate. flame cut would be the last option. Hi, just tried to order some tubing f...

Steel wheel tires - welding?

Hello all, I need 8 wheel tires with OD ~ 10,5". I know of 3 ways to get the raw material. 1) steel tubing. Its difficult to get with enough wall thickness here. If You find some, usually you have to buy a cmplete bar - 20 ft. Don't need more than 1 1/2 ft yet. 2) cutting from plate. Easy to ge...

Re: Boiler bushings

Hi Marty, thank You for the explanations and sketch. Being from the metric world, I'm a bit surprised about that 1/4" dimension. 1/4" for let's say a 1/2" pipe to a pressure vessel Looks a little oversized to me. My memories about the German pressure vessel regulations in effect until...

Re: Source for small pieces of SAE660 bearing bronze

The plans call for gunmetal, but I have been advised that SAE660 bronze is a better choice. Hi Ben, I'm living on another continent, so I cant give You sources for Bronze in the states. But I'm astonished for that particular sentence. What is gunmetal in Your opinion? For me, SAE660 bronze isn't br...
