Re: Good luck with Buck
Frank, I can't say for sure if I would expect the chuck to have zero runout out of the box. It could have saved a lot of time and frustration to true the chuck OD on center and verify the face is true, then regrind the jaws. It is not that big a task if you have the capability. I have had a lot of s...

Re: Keeping with the theme
JK, Is what I have done was convert a breeze way of 500sq ft that was between the house and the garage. It already had a roof and a concrete floor. I put up walls at the front and back. The house and garage still have accesses, so it is not a real issue to me. I don't see it any different if it were...

Re: Acme Wire Stitcher
Yes, they do Les. The motor driven one I used many years ago would create staples out of flat wire as it fed through the machine. We used it to staple the bottom of heavy cardboard boxes for nails. Then came hot glue which did away with the tangles on the stitcher. As the story goes, the man (Briggs...

Re: VFD for three phase
There are some VFD's on eBay that can do fine for the home shop. If they are capable of running on single phase, they must have 30-50% higher capacity than the motor they are running. Some require only 3 phase input. A good amount of research on the specific application of the drive should prevent a...

The SN54LS138N will also replace this. Same chip, but a wider temp range. Radio Shack may even carry them in the 74LS series. The LS version is for Low Speed Shottky as I recall. For your purposes, I would think any 74*138N device would work except the 74C series. The C designates a CMOS chip which ...

Re: Keeping with the theme
Here is the exploded view of the parts. I still have a few things to finish these up as far as the drive pin off the handle and clearance holes for the welded nuts for the rack. Then I will need a mounting bracket in the door. For what it is worth, my doors are 2x4 construction and appear to be part...

Keeping with the theme
My shop is finally coming together. Now that I have my machines back in operation I can sprint to complete what I have had in the "wing it as I go" plans. Here is a picture of my door lock mechanism. Complete with some Bridgeport handles for door knobs, since this is a machine shop. /ubb/i...

Re: Stop the madness !
While I can relate to your passion in holding tolerances for parts that are being inspected for sale to a customer. I wouldn't discount Rich for pointing out what is acceptable practice in high production(read CHEAP) threading that may or may not have the same application for an apples to apples com...

Re: Stop the madness !
Before we go putting Rich's blanket statement on the chopping block. Please read the section on "Diameter of Tap Drill" in Machinery's Handbook Pg 1699 of the 24th edition at least. The subject area would be "Tapping" for those with other editions. Small screw threads even though...

Re: Sony DRO
Herm, I do not know either model, but I will offer you this. Double check the scale alignments to the machine ways first. Typically, if the scales are not aligned within about .005 to any plane(ways) they move with over their full length, errors will be detected as lost pulses input to the display. ...

Re: engine conversion, maybe off topic
even if it blows up it will still work as a counterweight! Just like water is owned by the state, which must be charged for when there is too much or to little. We must be careful about gravity stored in objects like these. That could become a taxable counterweight since it would still be serving a...
