Re: New to Group, New Machine
Do you by chance mean a Central Machinery 5980 (rather than 5890?) Not the machine to have if you have to hit 0.0001" tolerances building nuclear missiles out of titanium, but useful for small projects by the average homeowner who is willing and able to work within it's limitations. Welcome to ...

Re: Need assisstance with a 3 in1 Central Machinery 5981
A photo of your machine would be nice. I assume it is different from the one pictured in the manual, above, since you say it has a gear box. Typically, if you have a machine with screw cutting lead screw, the lead screw separates from the gearbox with a roll pin and is extracted, the table has to co...

Re: A Job Done on a 3in1
I do not hate them but my idea of a 3 in 1 is a bit different: Three lathes that I can setup to make one part I wish I had the shop space for that. My 3-in-1 may be the red-headed stepchild of machining tools, but it's way ahead of no machining tools. Since getting it 9 or 10 years ago, my thought ...

I was referring to Harold the moderator extraordinaire on this forum. Two of his posts on the subject worth checking out are:

Re: Tips on getting started with 3-in-1 machine
In general, the Grizzly manuals tend to be better than most alternatives for Chinese made machines. Grizzly seems to have native English speakers as tech writers. Most others have some Chinglish gobbldygook or machine-generated translations. As for mods, the OEM style milling vise/tool post combo is...

Makes sense. But then, most of the advice you give does.

Re: Help identifying and duplicating this thread.
Two separate go/no-go gauges, one with narrow threads and varying diameters, the other with varying thread widths?

Re: Help identifying and duplicating this thread.
I have always done acme threads groove up the middle first then front flank then back flank with a tool that is less then a thread form wide. Ok, my first thought was "that would simplify the grinding process". My second was "Wait, what?" How does that work? Do you have the comp...

Re: Help identifying and duplicating this thread.
Ok, maybe I'm really missing something here. With a V-thread, there is a tiny bit of flat at the root, but for the most part one v-thread tool can cut a range of thread pitches by cheating on the depth in favour of hitting the pitch diameter. It was my understanding that trapezoidal threads are not ...

Re: Help identifying and duplicating this thread.
A tap would be a poor choice, at least in my opinion. It may or may not cut size and may or may not cut straight and on location. I'd suggest a tap only if the length of the nut prohibited single pointing the thread, where you'd have complete control over the outcome. Keep in mind, if you use sharp...
