War does not favor Victor nor Vanquished. It only makes for hallowed ground and sacred memories.
A tribute to those that risked all before us. All gave some, and some gave all.

Re: Dog Lover Lament
Just as a follow up, the neighbor withthe barky cur is now without a dog. Teh poor thing was allowed to stay outside all the time and one morning the brass sail clip for the collar is broken. The dog is missing and did not return. So my prediction of poor care was sage. Dogs know where the food is a...

Re: Cheap Saltpeter for Stumps
IMHO waiting for nature is very slow. That is the advantage of grinding, burning and treatments, just to speed the process. I used spent batterries to add sulfuric acid to break down the wood fiber. It took 5 years for the cotton wood to begin to fall apart. The stump was a full 44 inches across, an...

Re: What is a good rust preventative for machine storage.
cheapest tube grease you can find with a dollop of thinner painted on with a brush. It 'dries' to a coat and comes off with a wipe of any cloth. WD -40 is useless after a few days, and most spray stuff is good for a coupla weeks. Regular motor oil is ok and migrates in a film to get where you miss, ...

Re: Combustion chamber Rheem hot air furnace
IMHO at some point everything wears out or gets busted past practical repair. I just went through this kind of delema with my house furnace. To be short, this is a safty item and a hackney repair will not do. It is much wiser to go on the market for Craigs list, and pay for the pick of the litter. U...

Re: 12" working railroad
Why use a mill when you have the perfect lathe to punch a hole? I would approach it from facing the slab and boring the axle hole to get the face profile. Once the ceenter hole and profile are done you can mount the piece on a mandrel made for the bore and finish the opposite side and flange. If you...

Re: 12" working railroad
On a quick change post I use a high speed tool bit sharpened with about an 1/8 radius to cut the tire. Once skinned the tire and flange are taken in one pass with a formtool to come down to the tire dimension. The taper is set on the compound and requires me to swing things around since my machine i...

Funny stuff. Like laughing at the hangman right before the drop.
It comes down to your dream shop, or the nightmare on your street.
I dont have enough room for my collections, being that I try to save most anything usable.

PPHAP! I averaged almost 60 hours a week when I was working. When industry threw me out all used up, I couldnt find the projects that I wanted to do because they were buried under the projects I had to do. Now everything waits for piddles of money to get bolts, paint, screws and other brac needed. I...

Not bad, just imperfect. You identified your mistakes and the next run will be different Innpouring a heavy melt, it is soemtimes advisable to use a pouring rail. taht is simply a sawhorse of needed heighth to carry the weight of the pouring shank above the mold and allow you to set the shank down o...

Re: 12" working railroad
PS: I am a hack with a hammer and by no means a professional machiniist. I am trying to tell what I do for the mediochre work that I do. It does not invovle fine fits for the most part but time spent is improtant, as well as a working result. The small engines I have built all run, and all have the ...
