Re: A3 Steel

Hi ken. I used to live in San Jose and frequented Sims for scrap metal. Great place. Is that where you're going?

Re: A3 Steel

I ordered from Online Metals. Their prices seem to be in line with speedy and they use PayPal, so quick transaction. We do have a Metal Supermarket in Portland, but I'll try that out later. Long drive for me. thanks

A3 Steel

The first step in building the A3 is machining the wheels. It looks like I need to get some 2 1/4" steel round bar. My first newbie question is what steel grade should I get for good machining and strength and where to go for the best price? thanks, rex

Re: New Shay or A3

Hi David, I'm in Portland Oregon. I will build in 3/4" scale. I want something I can lift when I'm done. :)
Don't know about any local clubs yet.

New Shay or A3

Hi I'm Rex. I have built a CNC mill and have a full hobby machine shop and want to put it to work building a steam engine. I have purchased Kozo Hiraoka's book set. The engine I'm interested in building is the "New Shay". However, the book for the "Pennsylvania A3 Switcher" state...
