Re: Tapered taps
7/16 80 TPI ? That is quite a fine pitch for a 7/16 the tread is so small it won't take much taper before the threads disappear.

Re: 1/2” steel
I have cut heavier than that and for longer run. 4.5" and the 7" are my only stock cutting tools.

Re: How to cut NPT thread on manual lathe?
If it was me, and the pipe length was not so much to preclude the tail stock offset I would offset the tail stock and work between centers. Sure a purit can raise 1/2 dozen objections but if it gets the job done the plumbing dope can fill in the imperfection. The tool is perpendicular to the tube NO...

Re: Best tap for hard steel.
I stopped breaking taps after I got it through my head that after 3 or 4 threads the tap is not going to straighten and start cutting way too deep. Another thing is to use a thread percentage commensurate with hardness and number of engaged threads. No point in having the female thread many times st...

Mystery Tool
Anyone knows what this tool may be? The rest of handle looks like a watchmaker screwdriver. The wire is to show features. There is a small groove on top, the center hole 1s 1/2" deep, but the wire can surface at the milled-out slot. The point has a shallow counterbore before the small hole wher...

Re: Best tap for hard steel.
Plan A Get some quality stock Plan B Try Annealing the spot or the entire part Plan C Gun Taps are 2 flutes and therefore the strongest, If the material is hard then 50% thread (larger hole) should make the job easier. Good tapping fluid is a must. I found Boelube is the best, is more than a wax tha...

Levels are probably the only instrument that can be adjusted/calibrate with no special tools.
Are you trying to "level" your lathe OR have doubt about whether the bubble is centered on a true horizontal surface and want to achieve such property.
The two task have different solutions.

If the grease method did not work, I was prepared to go into the spark plug hole with a 1/8 end mill and machine 0.060 off the visible piston top while rotating it freeing the ring.
