A level is a nulling instrument. Due to s...

Re: Hss for cast iron

Less rake than for mild steel, but in my experience cast iron machines easily and gives a good finish. Photos of the finish and of your cutter?

Re: Machinists Level

If you require a certain level of precision, you buy that and pay the price. If your lathe has never been leveled, the precision of this level is better than any guess. You decide if the price for this level matches its presumed level of precision. A lathe needs to be flat, not level. Leveling is j...

Re: Worm Oil Substitutes

The worm drive reduction ratio is 6:1 (followed by a 4:1 spur gear pair). According to my research that means that the worm drive should be about 90% efficient. The whole gearbox is about twice the size of 1.25hp 2500rpm 7.5:1 worm drives found in various catalogs. Load power won't exceed 400 watts ...

Re: Worm Oil Substitutes

According to my research worms need ISO 680. SAE 75 gear oil is about 46 ISO.

Worm Oil Substitutes

I'm building a power hacksaw. I scored a very nice 24:1 combination worm/spur reduction gear at the local university surplus store for $1.00 (had to make a cover and an input shaft adapter) but it's an unlabeled (and unused) spare part. I know I can buy worm gear oil by the gallon for ridiculous pri...

Re: Spin Grinding Wheel Before Starting

The transient torque when starting a three-phase induction across the line from zero speed can be as high as three times the pullout torque.

Re: R8 collet cleaning

I put a small amount of antisieze on the outsides of my collets and wipe the insides with acetone. Note that acetone can be nearly as dangerous as gasoline, though. If you are going work with open containers of it do so outside on the ground so that you can't dump the container onto your clothing. B...

Re: Spin Grinding Wheel Before Starting

I assumed that by "slipping" you meant that the wheel was changing its position slightly, not that the adapter was actually spinning in the wheel.
