Re: Bought a Hardinge Sjogren No2 D1-4
Harold, I didn't like the amount I had to crank the handwheel to both tighten and loosen the collets. Lot of wasted time when doing semi production type work....would much rather have a lever operated drawbar set up. Granted you loose the ability to run larger stock when you have a drawtube, but I b...

Re: Bought a Hardinge Sjogren No2 D1-4
I have a Sjogren 3J collet chuck that came with my Leblond. Interesting in that it was apparently supplied new with the lathe when built and has the machines serial number on it. Only used it once and didn't really care for it. When I got the lathe 20 some years ago, I had to regrind the spindle nos...

Re: Lathe chuck mounting standard?
Who is the manufacturer of the lathe and the model? Can you take a picture looking between the headstock and the chuck mount?

Re: Etching Brass for Painting
I was told this many years ago from a friend whom owned a body shop, once you have the brass cleaned up, apply several light /dust coats of etching primer.....it apparently will adhere better than a single heavier coat.

Re: Rod material
1144 would be a good choice for rods. High strength and good machinability.

Re: Threading Issues
Many of the older lathes had a lever that would select feeds in inches, versus feeds for threading. A Leblond Dual drive I used to own had that, and if you weren't paying attention and had the lever set for feed in inches, when you were threading you could come up with all sorts of different thread ...

Re: motor size
I have a 19" Leblond Regal and it has a 5 hp motor from the factory. I also scrapped a 19 Leblond that had a 7.5 hp motor on it. Eventually I am going to swap the 5 hp over to the 7.5 hp. Why? I run mostly insert tooling and at the higher rpm range which insert tooling prefers, I have many time...

Re: Finally used my machines today!
Harold, What you want is a MCLNR insert tool holder 1/2" shank. They are available, but not common. This holder uses CNMG 332, 331 inserts which is a 80 degree diamond, which gives you 4 cutting edges. ( MCLNR holders are probably the most commonly used holders in the 1" shank size) The ne...

Re: Patio's projects
I have an almost identical shop made flycutter, 10" as well. It however has a 1-1/4" shank so it doesn't fit in a collet. I have to use a 1-1/4 arbor to hold it when being used on the Bridgeport but it works quite well even extended out further from the spindle. I bought a pair of insert t...
