The machine work is the common denominator. I use all of the forums on the Home Machinist site - depending on the infomation that I'm looking for. I don't see the harm in one or more additional forums that cover (in detail) other aspects of our hobbies. I suspect we are missing out on the valuable i...

While I don't mind slight deviations or posts labeled as Off Topic, I would hate for this forum to become too general. A seperate forum is much more appropriate. I am building both steam and diesel so it not that I'm not interested in other topics....it is just that I joined this one for the steam i...

I don't see any problem with an Off Topic post, especially if the topic is accurately labeled. I find labels that that contain the term Off Topic especially helpful if the topic is not about live steam. It gives all of us the option to decide whether we want to read the topic or not. I personally re...

How do you get more teeth into the work if the material is thin? (does it require a finer blade or can you "block" the material to be cut up to increase thickness? If you do block the material up does the block need to be the same material (steel for steel, aluminum for aluminum, - or can ...

Band Saw(ing)

Well, I know how to destroy a blade (as documented in my other post). Any suggestions where I might find a chart that would help determine blade info (tpi) and proper speed (both blade and feed) verses material type? Are there other factors that need to be taken into considerstion when setting up to...

Band Saw Blade

Got a new band saw (sears, 20" , metal and wood cutting). Put the metal cutting blade on, set the saw to the "metal" setting, cut about 30" of angle ( 2x2 by 1/8" thick)....Destroyed the blade (lots of worn/missing teeth). Didn't seem like I was feeding too fast at the time....

Being new to all of this (live steam, machining, and this forum) - the drifting off subject has another (unintended -I think- effect). It really makes it hard to find info when you try to look back in history using the "Search". Sometimes the info that is off-subject is more informative th...
