Re: How much $$ for an atlas 12x36 and a shaper?
ctwo - thanks for the input... kinda what I was thinking too rudd - thanks for the info! The shaper has a vice and I beleive the original stand. I'll find out for sure. Also understand the toy part. I just think they are fun to watch run and I don't think it would hurt my tool grinding skills any. F...

How much $$ for an atlas 12x36 and a shaper?
Hi all, I really, really don't need either of these machines but think the shaper would be fun to play with. Both machines are in really good shape and well tooled. The guy started @ $2400 for the pair, I refused, then he came back @ $1600 and I refused, then he came back and asked what I would give...

Re: Threading with a grizzly lathe
Hi Hendo, Where in Wyoming are you located? Like John says, the manual looks to be pretty straight forward for the threads you want. for 28TPI it appears that you need the 24 tooth gear in the "a" position and the 84 tooth gear in the "b" position, both engaging the 127 tooth gea...

Re: LED lights for mill
That would be wonderful, except that LEDs require constant current, not constant voltage. Their voltage requirement is temperature-dependent. EDIT to add: Incoming supply at 4.5 V, 2 diodes dropping 0.7V each would result in 3.1V to the LEDs. Incoming supply at 5.5 V, 2 diodes dropping 0.7V each wo...

Re: LED lights for mill
Steve has it right. Silicone diodes exhibit approximately a 0.7 volt drop when forward biased. The difference between 5V and 3.6 is 1.4 volts so 2 diodes in series would accomplish that voltage drop leaving 3.6V for the leds. I am surprised that he had to parallel another set of diodes but I don't k...

Very nice!
I have the same mill and have to agree that the lighting is terrible. I converted the original lamp to leds but like your idea much better. it illuminates both sides of the mill.
Thanks for sharing,
Les

Re: Walk Away?
See what info you can get off of the motors. My guess is that they are probably syncros, not steppers. Gecko makes drivers for both. perhaps he has the wrong drivers?

Re: Student's first lathe for Christmas
Steve, My hat is off to you and everyone that helped you with this lathe. I can tell that you are proud of your efforts and rightfully so! Even if the recipient of this fine lathe decides that machining isn't for him, he will never forget this Christmas and the fine gift he got. It is this kind of g...

Re: MT3 Collets
I'm not sure how well they would work in your lathe. I bought a set and they work just dandy in my 8" rotary table and they seem to be fairly decent. I made a little adapter/drawbar arrangement that goes in from the back of the RT. Then I made some arbors with various diameters to fit the colle...

Pretty slick idea on the retainer Dave! I was going to make a handle a while back but couldn't come up with a plan to hold the blade in the handle.
