Re: Engaging Gauges

True, metal gages tend to be arbitrary, but to the non-technical person, the use of gage (or gauge) is suitable. To an engineer or anyone working with metals, the actual thickness in inches or millimeters is the only way to go. When it comes to letter and number sized drills, the assigned number/let...

Re: Amazing Engineering?

I haven't shaved in over 50 years. It all started when I got into a car accident that left a scar on my face. If I shave, I would cut the scar tissue, so I don't shave. I really don't have a heavy beard, but I do have a beard and sideburns that I keep trimmed. I do look scrawny at times, but at 87, ...

Digital calipers

Ok, before you say, "I told you time and time again about the inaccuracies of digital calipers", I want to say that I agree 100% with what you say. I understand it, I get it. But one thing doesn't make sense. If digital calipers are not what they say, why are the well-known manufacturers l...

Re: Jet 1236 lathe

Talk with your shop teacher about your lathe. He should be able to help you. Make any part you need in the shop while it is available. Do you have a micrometer? You should have one if you are going to do any machining. Even a cheap HF one is better than none at all. You can find a good used micromet...

Re: Drill chuck; new China or used German?

China must have the ability to produce precision parts, for spaceships and missiles, but we don't know if such items as drill press chucks used to produce them are Chinese made or are they using Albrecht, Rohm or other quality made chucks. It would be nice if someone could sneak a peek inside a Chin...

Re: Mitutoyo caliper not working

I checked with Mitutoyo and a technician walked me through all the possibilities and concluded that the caliper was bad. I have always treated my caliper with the utmost care. I bought a Mitutoyo because it was supposed to be the best caliper on the market. I would suggest that anyone thinking about...

Re: Gage Block Care & Feeding

I bought a cheap 81 block set; measured a few and they read right on. It's either that or a $5000 set of Webbers. Certainly, good enough for an amateur chip maker.

Re: Counterfeit calipers

I bought a counterfeit caliper that is supposed to be a Miyutoyo. It looks identical to the original except the caliper automatically turns on as soon as you move the jaws. Nice feature, but it has to shorten battery life. It appears to be working OK, but I'm not too happy that it is not an original...

Re: Concrete bench suggestions

In my 50 years of designing structures for Naval ships, I've never seen a concrete foundation onboard a ship. All foundations on board a ship were composed of angle irons and steel plate. These foundations were for machine tools like 16" lathes, milling machines, shapers, etc. The only place co...

Re: Gage Block Care & Feeding

Mineral spirits and paint thinners (what I think Harold meant when he said paint removers) Yes, that's what I meant, and I thank you for the correction. I have edited my original comments to reflect what I really meant. Don't know what I was thinking when I made that post. I also should have includ...

Re: Counterfeit calipers

I purchased a genuine Mitutoyo 6" digital caliper which I paid around $135. After 6 years, it quit. Rather than buy the same caliper, I bought a counterfeit one. It looks identical to the genuine one except it has an automatic ON when you move the jaws. I'm sure the battery won't last long on t...
