Atlas Lathe Model 3983 12 in
Once again I have been pursuing why this lathe will chatter under heavy cuts and I have narrowed it down to a few reasons. 1) My dad beat the crap out of it, no offence and it gave him years of pleasure using it. 2) The pin that locks the back gear in or out had battered the slot in the bull gear, a...

Re: Taper reamer dimensions of 1:30 ratio
Hi to you across the world. Amazon.com has a few of these tools and I assume that you can order from them. The guitar pin reamer is: http://www.amazon.com/Bridge-Tapered-5-degree-Woodworker-Luthier/dp/B01AYAAPZ0/ref=sr_1_8/186-9314077-5751304?ie=UTF8&qid=1454772010&sr=8-8&keywords=guitar...

Re: Bandsaw blade slipping off wheels
I've had the same issues with an old H/V Asian band saw, and most of the time a new blade fixes the problem. Mostly, I use Starrett's from McMaster-Carr, but if I remember, there is a small saw sharpening shop in a town just south of here that will make any length blade from stock. Those blades work...

Re: Collet question ?
Just 'BING' "er collet dimensions" and a lot of stuff will come up in the 'images of er collet dimension' listing. Maybe you did this and didn't find what you needed.

Re: Soft Jaw Capable Chuck for G4000
WesHowe's calculation of the force of the vacuum is an important number if you are pulling the part straight away from the surface. However, the part can slide more easily. Think wringing together of gage blocks: you can slide them apart but cannot pull them apart. So, if you are going to experiment...

Re: Way wear and lube
BadDog, I saw those type of fittings in the minimum search I did, but thought I'd better ask to be sure. Thanks for the information. Once again I'll have to take the lead screw, apron, and carriage off the lathe in order to drill the holes and de-burr the way side. It will give me the opportunity to...

Re: Way wear and lube
Baddog would you please suggest a name etc. for the flush mount h.p. fitting? I was unable to find what I think they should look like. Flush mount sounds better than a zerk.

Re: Way wear and lube
Got my jug of Vactra2 today., probably 30 years too late. Think I'll put zerks on the lathe carriage and use the pressure lubricator.

Re: I need help to identify this taper on a bull nose
Put a very thin coat of Hi-spot Blue or even Prussian Blue Oil paint on your taper and try it in a #5 Morse socket. The blue transfer will tell you how close you are to a #5MT. The math says it is a #5. You could but the bull nose end into the headstock socket, line up and support the outboard end w...

Re: Maybe this will help someone else.
It was taken apart because it is a SHAR head and sometimes things are not 'de-chipped' inside. I was also inspired to emulate warmstrong1955's setup for a ball turning device in Lathes: Wes Howe: Turning a concave surface. Since it is less than 20°F here in NE Ohio and my shop is in the garage, I de...

SolidWorks 2008. Spent 10 years with SW 2003 thru 2013. Never did learn all the nuances but I can make usable models and drawings.
