Dan, You made mention of casting iron. Are you doing your own melting? If so, by what method? I've read of melting with a crucible furnace with some degree of success, but not routinely. I'm curious if, by chance, you've overcome some of the inherent problems if so. I'd enjoy reading your comments. ...

Harold, ...........Harold,..........Harold! We shall see if "you" respect my right to my opinion! Most assuredly, that's no problem. I just want to insure that your opinion doesn't become the basis by which others form an opinion of their own, as if there is nothing wrong with rusted mach...

I do believe i am using mostly the c5 carbide. That be the case, you should be able to see the problem when you inspect the tool. It will be rounded, or otherwise eroded at the point of contact. Looking at the front relief area, you often see a shiny band that runs vertically along the cutting edge...

Something that I may have missed, in the above posts, is that a .500" gauge pin will NOT fit in a .500" hole.. You need a couple of tenths to work with. Greg B. It was accepted by the QC department where I worked in precision grinding that the size of a bore was the size of pin that fit b...

Re: Measuring holes accurately

So do any of you with more experience have any suggestions how to accurately read a hole diameter when you don't have exactly the "right tool" ? Assuming you have a micrometer that is within the range of the hole in question (you should have specified a size), you have a couple options (a...

Yup I love it when I see that brown color, I found this at a local college up here for $250.00, couldn't keep the grin off my face while I was paying for her. She had been sitting under a leaky blue tarp for 2 yrs. Sadly, the machine was worth only that much had it not been rusted. Shapers larger t...

304 is one of the materials that will cut cleanly. It's tough, but not hard, so it responds fairly well to positive rake, but with light feed. I've yet to find a tool that will stand up to heavy feed in 304. Edge life is generally short, with inserts broken when not changed in a timely fashion. If y...

You didn't mention the material you're machining, nor have you stated the amount of experience you have. If you're machining mild steel (low carbon), you should expect the surface to be ragged----it doesn't cut well, not unless you run it very fast (using carbide, not HSS) with the proper depth of c...

What I think is it's a damned shame they let the machine get rusty. It is a nice machine, from all appearances, but rust is truly a bad thing for precision machine tools. You pay for precision when you buy such machines, but it's lost with the rust. That's not to say the machine wouldn't run, or eve...

the guy says that it will cut metric and imperial threads. What do you mean about the quick change? Welcome aboard! That's a good question for those that may not understand. When chasing threads, or altering feed rates, a lathe without a quick chance requires that the gears on the end of the headst...

What I meant but failed properly to articulate, was whether acetylene, stored in the presence of acetone as a stabilizer, is exactly the same, when burned, as ordinary carbide gas. That is, is there any effect on it's specific heat or any other change. Exactly the same? Given the fact that regulato...
