To get a rapid quench in water the water must be agitated or the part moved rapidly through the quench. If the part is held still and the quench is not agitate a layer of steam will form around the part which acts as an insulator.

I have removed a lot of broken pipe stubs using a hacksaw blade. Make 3 or 4 slits inside the pipe stub. Go deep enough to see the beginning of threads. Using a pointed punch, applied next to a slit,collapse the pipe stub. After that you should be able to back out the stub with needle nose pliers.

Last fall I went to the local Fastenal store. They had a sign static that they would only sell to business accounts.

I would mount my drill in my ER16 straight shank holder. I would hold the drill as short as possible and still have enough stickout to get through the metal. My current lathe is a Nardini. Both the headstock and the apron have cam-driven piston pumps. I get reliable oiling regardless of direction of rotation.

Floating reamer holders sometimes show up on eBay. Look for Glenzer or Scully Jones brand. They are built to allow only radial float. I had a 40s vintage Pratt & Whitney 14" lathe. There was no provision for reversing the spindle. It would have been possible to install a reversing switch on the motor. If the machine were run in reverse the lube oil pump would not provide oil to the gears and bearings.

Remember with the mill spindle vertical there is zero fpm on the centerline of the cutter. As others suggested tilt the spindle to shift the cutting area away from dead center.

Look for a used Glenzer or Scully Jones floating holder. I got mine on the Bay.
