Re: Blue prints SD
Using an HO model is an okay method, O scale is better. Finding a full size engine is the best. You really don’t need to get super details of the inner workings and modeling of the frame (those items are going to differ when scaled down to fit the needs of the drive train and accessories). What’...

Re: Left/Right, Port/Starboard, Fireman/Engineer
When building my locomotives I stamped numbers into the parts: Facing forward: Odd #s on the left side parts, even #s for the right side parts, sequencing from front to rear. For items like eccentrics and straps: 1 and 3 (left), 2 and 4 (right). etc... On my F-unit, I have used colored ty-raps on h...

Re: Left/Right, Port/Starboard, Fireman/Engineer
Back during my railroad days, the terms “engineer’s side” and “fireman’s side” were most often used in the Diesel houses and back shops. “Right” and “left” were ambiguous, and it seemed no one knew what “port” and “starboard” meant...unless they were Navy veterans or recreational sailors. :D That ...

Re: Cylindrical Grinding
I certainly would not do any grinding without getting my head back into it (since I was never an expert at grinding in the first place). Yep! As I learned years ago, precision grinding is a whole art form unto itself. I haven't touched a surface or cylindrical grinder in some 35 years. At this p...

Re: Oxy-acetylene welding steel boiler?
Many production pressure vessels are welded via the metal inert gas (MIG) or submerged arc processes, both of which can be highly automated, resulting in consistent results from piece to piece. The manual tungsten inert gas (TIG) process, while capable of producing the high-quality welds needed wit...

’Tis a shame. I've seen some of his work and must say he was quite the videographer.

At least with the wheels up, the boiler water stays over the crown sheet.

Re: Silver soldering verses compression fittings
I’d be flaring such connections if you want to be able to disassemble them in the future. I personally think compression fittings are something that should be outlawed.
Silver-soldering should be thought of as semi-permanent.

Re: Sprocket question and others
Newb question, but what about a roll pin to secure wheels or sprockets? Sure...if you can figure out how to keep the pin from drifting out of the hole. :D Cyclic loading tends to make pins move around, something that I repeatedly ran into back in the days when I worked with automatic subway car d...

Re: Interesting story about a 2019 theft in the UK
Here is an interesting, albeit sad, story about a theft of some locomotives in the UK back in 2019. https://getpocket.com/explore/item/the-great-model-train-robbery?utm_source=pocket-newtab-en-us Indeed interesting, especially the victims’ impressions of the police and their lackadaisical handling ...

Re: What type of nuts are these ?
The three circumferential “dashes” on the seat face indicate some of these nuts are grade-5, a medium-strength fastener like that available in well-stocked hardware stores. Some nuts appear to be “prevailing torque” types, in which the nut is very-slightly distorted during manufacturing to make it ...
