Re: lathes and mills cannot be level on ships?
Here are a couple more pics of the bridge...no unused space. Compared to the destroyer I was on, the Mo's pilot house is like a penthouse suite in a downtown New York City hotel. :D Of course, Mo's beam was 108 feet, not the 39 feet of a typical World War II tin can. Warships are amazingly cramped,...

Re: lathes and mills cannot be level on ships?
You have to go on board to appreciate how massive the ship is. The last two pictures show the cast steel armoured steering station mounted on the bridge. Notice the thickness of the hatch walls. The last photo, I believe, is the helms mans viewing port. Being a Navy veteran, I have to be pedantic. ...

Re: The IBLS URL has expired and UNAVAILABLE
Most likely someone got an expiration notice and forgot about it. Unfortunately, once the domain expires and gets intercepted in this way no E-mail will get through—it will bounce. If they renew within 30 days of the expiration things should go back to normal.

Re: Iowa Class Battleship Machine Shop
Modern CAD is only 30+ years old. Many complicated projects were done very nicely without it; it is only a tool. Actually, CAD has been around since the 1970s. My former employer when I was in the railroad business acquired a CAD system in 1980, which was purchased used from Boeing. There were four...

...they don't think too highly of steam clubbers where I happen to work. :( Regardless, I asked my boss how long he thinks it takes for someone to build one of these live steamers. He said "Maybe about 3 weeks". I then told him it typically takes around 1000-4000 hours to build one...He t...

Re: WWII Era Bandsaw Refurb
Looks like a nice, substantial beast. If you suddenly decide you don't need it anymore I know of a shop with enough floor space to give it a new home.

BDD...will add... The HMC-461-XXX plastic lenses ARE fresnal lenses. Using an arbor to fit the lens over snugly...can spin these on a lathe to cut the original lens threads away and use the remaining disk for new/replacement caboose marker or classification lamp lenses. Carl B. Plus the lenses are ...

Re: EMD F7 in SCALE
For those who are interested in the parts I used to make the class lights I've attached PDFs with the information. Any 10mm LED will work, or you could even attach short, stiff leads to an incandescent lamp and use that instead of an LED. Electronics distributors such as Digi-Key and Mouser stock th...

Re: Rewinding and potting a Sag 12 Graziano clutch
Earlier this year I had posted on this project, seeking guidance on the possible rewind of the clutch...Thanks for taking a look at my project. Nice job, Harold! Me being me, I would have been figuring out how to get rid of that pesky coil and use pneumatics to actuate the clutch. Winding 50 gazill...

Re: Using paper to set gear clearance
pete-- I'm interested in the idea of using way oil on the gears. I've been using some kind of grease . . . a light lithium grease, if I remember correctly. (It's been almost five years since I've touched them.) Not using grease would sure be nice! --Bill I use SAE 90 gear oil, such as you'd put int...

If all else fails, you can use it to defend yourself.
