Re: Woodinville Shops

Harold, Nice! Is it feasible to try to gold plate something here in my shop? I’ve got a bit of gold lying around, and plenty of 3 1/2” spikes, but never attempted such a thing, other than electrolysis. Looks like the one Ryan found is a replica of the Promontory Point spike. It’s very nice, but sell...

Re: Woodinville Shops

Found one on eBay. Curtsey of SeniorGoogle of course. “only $20”, with shipping. Looks like the one in your photo.

Re: Woodinville Shops

Ryan, yes, you win the prize! It is a root. I need to cut it back some, along the top, so the undercarriages of the cars can clear it. A small design error on my part when we laid this portion of track. My boy and I finished laying the final piece of track to complete the main line this afternoon. W...

Re: Train Mountain Triannual

And finally, a link to a you tube video of railbiking down the Panama Canal. The Aquifna bottle isn’t an advertisement. I didn’t realize it would show up so prominently in the video as I was filming. https://youtu.be/Ytp3qqUq0b0 The new track work at TM is a major achievement. I understand this long...

Re: Woodinville Shops

Hmmm, maybe here is a you tube video of a test run over the older portion of track. My boy is setting up a You Tube account for me. So might try posting a few other videos. Haha. Obviously one or two small things need to be worked out at the end of this run. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kqY...

Re: Should I grab this shaper?

Seems like a good price. Now days these small machines often go for $1000 to $1500. Bigger ones less. People that have shapers and use them very often have good things to say about them- including some who work in commercial shops. This is squarely a hobby forum so for me the argument that shapers a...

Re: Your RR grading methods??

I’ve been going back and forth on whether to lay a sub base of gravel over a prepared road bed, or prep the road bed and lay the track. Then dump gravel over the top and rake and tamp under the ties. Also debated endlessly about need for a ballast car, versus some kind of 4 wheel hopper pulled by a ...

Re: 12" working railroad

Dave, our track crew at KLS have a similar ballast laying hopper thing to that you describe, except on rubber tires. The hopper is set to lay new ballast at a constant height - Iam thinking around 3” off the ground , and the needed width of a single track ROW. 30-36” or thereabouts. It lays a nice e...

Re: How do you guys feel about the "Just get it done" attitude?

This is why we have tolerances. Or more accurately, a range of tolerances. If it fits within the allowable tolerance, I will usually go with it. If it materially affects the working of the machine, I will try to remake a better part, or fix it some way, for example, put a sleeve in an oversized bore...
