Re: Making Boxcar Ends

You are not trying to coin the whole surface, just trying to deform it a bit in selected places, and the indentations are not straight sides, quite a bit of relief, so the press loads are much lighter. I did have to heat the 1/8" thick blanks for the Jbox lids, but box car ends could be 1/16 or...

Re: Making Boxcar Ends

Not box car ends, but I have pressed 1/8" thick full sized journal box covers, and replacement floor panels for a Land Cruiser in 1/16" thick stock. The Jbox covers were about 9" square with a relief of 5/8". blanks were heated before pressing, sometimes I used a reheat part way ...

Re: slot chisel

Probably back to your original idea. Use a half width, or slightly wider, chisel to keep the load on the mill feed down.

Re: What type of belt?

Depends on sheave sizes and load. I have a 1908 power hacksaw that was originally flat belt drive from a line shaft. Pulley is about 16"+ dia and 4" wide. It has been driven by a V belt for the last 50+ years. V pulley is 4"? Works great. It is possible to have mixed sets, not optimum...

Re: I found it!

Greg,

Had the exact same thing happen multiple times. I can even look at something head on and not see it. Wife get frequent calls to find the obvious! Buying a couple of spares helps too. Folks ask why I have at least six tape measures, obvious answer is so that I can find at least one.

Re: My new-to-me Jet 1236PS junky lathe

You have more time and patience than me. Having decided to get rid of the Jets, I would have not spent much time on them, just sell as is, they are going to take a lot of time and money to make useable machines, and use my limited time for moving ahead.

Sometimes the solution is surprisingly simple, even if not immediately obvious.

Rube (Heath in the UK) would be pleased, really happy if you could incorporate a few more steps.

Re: Rivet gun primer

Try the Yard Store. New and surplus aircraft riveting parts; just ordered a few rivet sets at a very reasonable price. Recently ordered rivets from Hanson, fine. Also check ebay. Currently doing some work with 3/32 rivets. Put a pressure regulator in the air line, my rivet gun works decently at 40 p...

Re: sheetrock; glue and screws?

Gluing is most uncommon, even in Calif. I built a couple of houses there, and worked with local builders on and off. This is the first time I have ever heard of gluing sheetrock to the studs. Gluing down the subfloor, definitely yes.
