Re: brass plus bronze in needle valve

Many thanks for al the advice! Fred sent me a link to your excellent post about making half-round, Jack. It does look like fun! I think I'll give it a try...

Re: brass plus bronze in needle valve

Thanks for the replies! I will try machining both and observe the differences. Fred - I think I got the round stock from our local buddy Alan T. If so, I'd wager he ordered it from Enco. Glad to know the 2 materials can peacefully co-exist. If the machining is weird with the round stock I'll just ge...

brass plus bronze in needle valve

I am getting closer to finishing my Allen Mogul Tender. I just got the 360 brass hex stock to make the outer/lower part of the water valves. The upper/inner part is made from half-inch round brass. I have some half-inch round but now I think it may be bronze not 360 brass. I know enough about dissim...

Re: Rivet Squeezer

Bruce, thanks for posting your plans and photo. I also appreciate your description of the sequence you used as it gives me an idea about where to start. I think I will experiment with the angle iron pieces inside my coal chute section first, then move on to something like the method you laid out... ...

Re: Rivet Squeezer

Fred - good point about the hex stock screw. I think I have an extra gear puller screw, and may try using that (need to see if I have a tap with the proper thread size). Presumably the gear puller screw is hardened, so it would save some fab time and I could just put a ratchet wrench on the top to d...

Re: Rivet Squeezer

I appreciate all the feedback. I found a photo of the actual item, taken by Carl Carlsen and posted on the web along with his photos from the GEARS show. Here is a link, and I'll attach the photo below: http://www.pbase.com/captain_carl/image/118493324 Since my raw stock stash has enough steel to ma...

Jared,

Thanks, I guess I'll go ahead and build one. Do keep us posted - I'll do the same if I finish mine first...

Rivet Squeezer

Has anyone built and used the rivet squeezer shown in issue 20 of the Model Engine Builder magazine? The device was designed by Alan Suttie and resembles a large C clamp with a threaded rod that closes 2 six-inch long "Alligator" jaws. One of the jaws is part of the frame, and the other ja...

Re: Allen Mogul Solid Frame Question

Hi Bill, It seems like you are building the plate frames from scratch and can design these "bumps" into it. IIRC, the stock frame is around 3" high and the Rogers/Cooke frames are 2.5" with the pedestal binders extending to the 3" dimension. It took me a bit to figure out w...

Re: Allen Mogul Solid Frame Question

Thanks for the feedback. I do not know about the "gotchas" you are referring to, Buddy. Please tell me so I don't make the same mistakes. I am trying to copy the original dimensions of the built-up frame as closely as possible. My "cad expert buddy" is coming over Saturday mornin...

Allen Mogul Solid Frame Question

Hi All, I am considering having solid frames cut for my mogul. The prints show "Cylinder Bars" that bolt to the frame bottom. The attached photo shows a Rogers Cooke solid frame with the cylinder bars welded to the frame. See green writing. Is there any reason I should not have the frame s...

Joe - thanks, I think I understand. You made a rod mount by threading part of a small piece of rod, and silver soldering the unthreaded part of the rod in the "nook" where the top bar and bolster end come together. So the threaded part of the mount faces inboard and serves as a mounting st...
