Re: Ash Pan Latch Ideas?
Love the idea of the remote release. However, MAGNETS. I'm on it Steve. Perfect solution. Thanks!

Re: Ash Pan Latch Ideas?
Bill, good point. I have a gap on the slides, we shall see.
Marty... I like the idea of using friction. I'm not quite following the geometry you describe. Could you provide some more insight?
Thanks!

Re: Ash Pan Latch Ideas?
Steve, the next time I lift to boiler I am absolutely 100% doing it the way you have shown. For now I need a retrofit for the front. I am doing a sliding arrangement like you show for the rear pan.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Ash Pan Latch Ideas?
The ash pan drop-down doors on my Allen Mogul were completely unworkable. I am converting the rear access to a slider, but I need an easy to use latch for this front access. It would nice to have something that trips easily with the poker, and then automatically re-latches when pushed back up. I'm s...

Wash my locomotive
I've been working on my Allen Mogul in the garage. I've had it on it's side, had to grind a brass tab off... there's soot, ash, grime, filings, and junk all over the chassis, drivers, running gear, etc. I'd love to hose it down with pressurized kerosene or diesel, but that's out of the question. Wha...

Re: Allen Mogul: Packing in saddle assembly?
Bill... that makes sense. The cavity was packed full. I will don my mask, soak it with water and then pull/scrape it all out of there. Thanks for the reply.

Allen Mogul: Packing in saddle assembly?
Greetings, This situation has me stumped. I removed the axle pump from this smokebox saddle casting and it is full of something. I removed the plate that is the pilot truck pivot and lo and behold it is full of some sort of crumbly material. Maybe it's ash... but it doesn't seem like it. Also, using...

Re: Pump o-rings
Thanks all for the info and advice. I'm headed to the Parker O-ring guide.
10 Wheeler Rob: how many wraps of graphited yarn would you expect on the hand pump? 2 full wraps or so? It makes sense now that this is how that pump works. The packing was missing when I took it apart.

Pump o-rings
See the attached photo. These are the tender and axle pumps out of the Allen Mogul I am working on. The tender pump has no o-ring, I will be machining one into the ram. If one ring is good, are two better? What is the correct way to spec the o-ring? Select an o-ring size, then machine the grooves to...

Many thanks for the input. There's room for 45' so I think I will go with that consensus. When the time comes...

Radius for Allen Mogul?
What's a good minimum radius to use for planning a backyard railroad? Allen Moguls, LE Pacifics? Backyard railroad vs. a club railroad, I'm presuming I could use tighter radii if not trying to accommodate bigger, fancier engines. Not so much physically the minimum, but a good working minimum.
