Re: Gear cuting
Would this be the good place to fit in a stepper motor to make the required amount of turns. They can be quite accurate and repeat very nicely without getting distracted. The gcode for something like that should be quite simple.

Re: Packing gear cases with grease
Interesting aside, at least to me. My snowblower manufacturer seemed to adhere to convention and fill the worm gearbox 2/3 with grease just like they should and it didn't leak out through the seals that way. However, snowblower gearboxes do not get warm enough in northern Minnesota for any oil to le...

Re: Question: Parting Blade Thickness
Regrind, then hone the cutting edge. I've been able to do a reasonable job of parting on my mini-lathe by keeping that edge very sharp and everyone says that a mini-lathe is as rigid as a wet noodle.

Re: Bad vibrations; is it in my head?
This may not be the problem but have you ever experienced a tapered roller bearing that has flaked off a bit of metal from one of the tapered rollers? No movement or slack in the bearing but lots of rumble.

Does the job you have actually require rebar? There may better solutions. Give us some hints on what it needs to do.

Re: Thinking about cnc
"But I do like the idea that I could duplicate a part simply by running the program again . ( yea I get that it's not quite that simple ) " Yes it is that simple. You have the part designed, you put that design through the CAM process to generate the gcode and save the gcode with a name yo...

Re: Thinking about cnc
What is the purpose of going to CNC for you? Multiple runs of the same design? Ability to make complicated cuts that are difficult to impossible to achieve by hand? Just curiosity about CNC and how it works? For me it is more of a curiosity about how it works and lack of hand-eye coordination that l...

Re: solid rivets
I was taught to use a heavy bucking bar behind the head of the rivet, then peen the other end to form a head to hold the rivet in place before hammering it home to swell the rivet into the holes so even if worn there would be no slack in the rivet.

Re: CNC tolerances
The bed on my 3D printer isn't flat. I could do a "mesh bed leveling" and map out that curvature so the printer would "know" what that curvature was to some degree but instead I threw a bunch of money ($20) at it by installing a glass bed. Note that the first thing to do after in...

Re: Parting tool holder
How about something like this, a self-contained cutoff toolholder. The height will have to be changed if you need to extend or shorten the stickout to accomodate deeper cuts or for more rigidity.

Re: AlphaTIG 200x
All those knobs give you way more control of how the welder works. If you need that control you will want all of them. If you don't need all of them, find out the few you do and leave the rest alone.
