Re: Connor 4+4 Beam Engine

We have a brand new Connor at GGLS. It looks pretty good and ran fine on its first outing a couple weeks ago. It looked to me like a fairly easy loco to build but YMMV depending on your experience. The owner is an MD with no machining experience and little time so it took awhile before it came for i...

Re: Tubes...leaking

sodium silicate. McMaster-Carr has it. You have to remove all the valves and such before you use it since it will clog up everything. You mix about a cup of sodium silicate with water and put it in the boiler. then when everything is sealed up, you put a little air pressure on it, like 5 psig. When ...

Re: Smokebox Length Ratio

My guess would be they had to accommodate particulate screens to try to get the smoke particles from being blown out the stack. I can't think of any thing else that would be large enough to require more space besides that and the aforementioned feedwater heater.

Re: Tubes...leaking

You have to give us some more details. Is this a copper or steel boiler? What are the tubes made of and what ID/OD? How are the tubes held in the boiler - rolled, welded, brazed? How many tubes? If you want to repair the boiler, assuming it can be done, you will have to take it off the chassis so yo...

Re: Alloy of brass and zink in a home foundry

I had a couple of those yesterday. I was pouring brass and got it way too hot. Opened the lid and.... it's really bright.

Re: Dome Patterns

Even easier is to use lost foam casting. There are lots of instructions on how to do this on the internet.

Re: Water pressure gauge

I agree but be sure the highest value can stand the pulsating unless your cross head pump has an air chamber or something to even out the pulses. The best range for a gauge should be about 50% higher than the boiler running pressure just as the steam pressure gauge should be. Gauges work best at abo...

Re: Three Cylinder Examples?

My 3-cyl Schools Class locomotive has Walshaerts valve gear on all three cylinders. The center cylinder has an eccentric instead of a return crank which the outside cylinders have. It is a Henry Greenly and Earnest Steel design. There is a rather incomplete plans set for this engine in 7 1/4" g...

Re: Alloy of brass and zink in a home foundry

Why would you want to add more Zinc to Brass? Brass is already an alloy of Copper and Zinc.
