Thank you

Pull off a safety valve.

Any type of raw potato will work.

Re: Foaming boiler water

Add a few slices of raw potato or sweet potato. Fire up, as usual, and the potato simply disappears. This is a very old remedy as told to me by Steve Bratina, and it WORKS! I had been chasing a water gauge issue for 1/2 the summer, changing input and output locations, added a water column etc, etc. ...

Re: At what point is a boiler big enough to be steel instead of copper?

You need to set your OP based on the weight on the drivers and the throttle design or else the locomotive will spin the drivers at the slightest touch and be not much fun. Look at the whole system. I have a Berkshire that I ran for a while at 140 psi and an Atlantic that is set to 80 psi. Each has a...

Re: What wheel arrangments work best on a high line?

I've been fortunate to run a lot of locomotives, from 0-4-0 to 4-8-8-4 in 3/4" scale. Small engines like the Tich can be very frustrating to learn on, so look for something you like (this is important) , has a generous fire grate area, pumps more water than you need, and suits the limits of you...

Re: Anyone here go to high lines all over the country?

Jim will your track be on the ground or a high line as it was built Joe Hi Joe, It will be an elevated track. I bolted a few of the 16-foot lengths together on the ground for some young nephews & nieces to get a taste of coal-fired live steam before winter arrived but at 6' 4" tall there a...

Re: Anyone here go to high lines all over the country?

I am currently doing some layout & excavation work at my home in preparation for erecting a 385-foot loop with 3-1/2" & 4-3/4" track. It was one of three layouts that Art Ellis (Niagara Interlake RR) had built. I also regularly travel to clubs in the eastern part of Canada & USA.

Re: Anyone here go to high lines all over the country?

PQ - Montreal Live Steamers, about 600' x 2 loops (though I am sure Jim will be along to correct me...) OK, only if you want me to. Montreal has a 1370-foot mainline plus siding, facilities, etc for 3-1/2" & 4-3/4". we had the forethought to design the track and switches to allow runn...

I was fortunate to visit the KCRR a week ago. A very challenging run on a beautifully constructed track.

CNR No. 46 is in my shop. This summer I built a brand new boiler for it with Keith Wood.
