Re: Piston Rings for Kozo A3 1.5"

I'm in need of the same on the same engine. I was just going to make them but boy would that save a lot of time not having to. Is there a formula or guidline for sizing? The issue I have is that my bores are slightly over 1.75 by about .010 to .015 and wondering how this would effect the finished si...

Re: Charlie Purinton, 1922-2010

Wow! The man himself has left us. As a boy I remember myself learning the "family tree" of Live Steam from LBSC, Greenly, Evans, Purrington, Shattock, Coventry, Langworthy et all. I always respected that line of people who came before and made the hobby what it is. God bless and my condole...

Re: Verticle Boilered Steam Loco..HELP!!

It sound like you might want to go back and do a little research on at least boiler and cylinder size. An 18" dia boiler? I've seen 15" gauge locomotives use them. You will not need that much steam space in the loco you propose. From what you describe it would make more sense to go with so...

Re: Main Rod, Side Rod and Valve Gear Material

Howard's point is valid in that 7075 T6 is well beyond the tensile strength of mild steel, actually almost twice the strength being about the same as stainless. Even the strength of standard 6061 T6 bar is well beyond brass or bronze. I have more than a few old LE drawing sets and almost all of them...

Re: O.S. 1" Shay

I remember an OS shay many years ago outfitted for propane but it had the typical solarflow setup. 4 burners doesn't sound like enough even for the smallest engine. What's the dimension of the firebox? Pictures would be helpful.

Re: Wet Whistle

If you watch many full size whistles being blown, you'll often notice a smaller jet of steam just below the whistle inlet that acts as a condensate drain. It's usually just a really small hole but it could be a slightly open valve as Dave mentions. A #55 hole in the inlet pipe has been used traditio...

Re: Aligning crosshead guides

I did notice this. It looks as if Kozo specifies about .005" or so of total play between the guides but that's in 3/4 scale. But I did consider what happens with crosshead direction. I notice the oil galleries on most cross heads that channel oil form the top shoe down to the bottom and I've se...

Re: Aligning crosshead guides

Thanks all. Very helpful stuff. Yeah I considered having the frames ground or machined flat but jeesh, that seems like overkill to me. I must admit I was a bit stunned by the fact that none of this is even casually mentioned in the book. It's not a Kozo slam it's just that it is important that these...

Aligning crosshead guides

I'm getting ready to install the crosshead guides on my 1.5" scale Kozo A3. Since the guides have to be both horizontally parallel and parallel looking from the top of the piston rod, I'm looking for an easy way to go about this. Kozo does not provide much information and infact doesn't even me...

Re: Whistle help

Yep. I have a print of a whistle built for Sierra #18 that is nearly an exact match to this accept for the pipe mount. It's an internal valve with the valve seat at the bottom just like Fred shows in the photo above.

Re: Snifters and throttle quadrants...

Can you substitute a 3/16" ball? The 13/64 ball is a bit of an oddball. They seem to be available but in nothing less than huge quantities.

Re: Snifters and throttle quadrants...

Thanks Greg. Really like the looks of these guys. Now all I need is a set of steam operated cyl cocks and some 90deg check valves for lubrication and I'll be set. You say "Half round" was milled. I think that's what I was talking about. I didn't want to have to setup the poor man's rotary ...
