Re: Scaling Horsepower
Good to see you in here, er...BigDumbDinosaur. I had a look at your thread, and saw some pictures in one of the other threads, I think it might have been your first post on the site even. Looks great! I find it interesting and like the fact that you are trying to replicate to scale the performance a...

Re: Scaling Horsepower
Wow cbrew, that thing is hauling the mail...do you know the approximate speed? Also it looks like your post may have been cut short? It seems for a 1.6" GP38 120W traction motors would yield realistic performance, but that assumes that the motors can deliver 120W throughout their speed range, w...

Scaling Horsepower
Hello all, this may be my first post in the Riding Scale area... I have been interested for some time in building riding scale trains for use on 7.5" gauge track (1.5" or 1.6" scale), and have done plenty of reading on the subject. One thing I have noted in particular for the gas/hydr...

Re: Engine on Ebay
Has it got a copper boiler?
How much does it weigh?
What's the going rate on scrap steel...
Hopefully it doesn't end up being cut up for scrap.

Re: Back Pressure Gage Installation in Live Steam
What purpose does a back pressure gauge serve in the running of a live steam locomotive?

Re: Stack exhaust design revisited: the 1 in 6 taper myth?
Yeah I think you're right on that Harold...I completely neglected to consider temperature and state. That positive pressure pulse might just leave you with some liquid water in the cylinder, which is bad in all respects.
Now if the engine were running on compressed air...

Re: Stack exhaust design revisited: the 1 in 6 taper myth?
Perhaps the same high pressure pulse would be used to increase cylinder pressure prior to the steam inlet opening. Say what?  Please explain, in language all of us can understand, how increased pressure in a cylinder is going to aid the introduction of steam. Seems to me you'd desire...

Re: Stack exhaust design revisited: the 1 in 6 taper myth?
I'm wondering how useful pulse tuning would be on a steam locomotive...in an ICE, depending on the valve timing, you want a state of vacuum at the exhaust valve when the valve closes to ensure most of the exhaust gases are removed to avoid spoiling the fresh charge or to help draw the fresh charge i...
