Re: Victor steady rest needed

I agree with Harold, you have to consider cuttings getting around the rollers. The steady rest for my 16 inch Summit probably weighs a hundred pounds, it goes on with the crane so Im guessing a bit. Wondered at the chinsy plastic knob they had on the stud to hold the top closed. One day a heavy cutt...

Re: Indexing plate compatibility question

You may even be able to use the dividing head to make its own plates. I recently needed to step off 125 divisions on a dial. 40/125 = 8/25 so I needed a plate with a multiple of 25 holes. Of course the plates I had didn't have that count. BUT 40/25 = 1 and 3/5 so any plate with a multiple of 5 would...

I had a spray can loose its pressure as well. Did the same thing, punctured it and poured it in a jar. Have had to add acetone a couple of times to thin it.

Re: How does temperature affect metals being worked?

If the micrometer and the material being measured are at the same temperature and made of the same material the effects would be self cancelling. I expect the body of a micrometer is made of cast iron so it will shrink ever so slightly less. 6.0 / 6.7 = 0.896 so you add 10% to the CHANGE in dimensio...

Re: Creative version of a 3 phase switch?

The 2 pole switch on 3 phase is the same as switching 220 with a single pole switch. I've seen it done, it works, and as long as someone doesn't connect themselves between the hot leg and ground all is well.

Re: Home Built Puller

Yes the finer thread will give you more push for the same torque. Half the pitch probably won't give you twice the force due to the added area creating more friction, Im sure theres a formula somewhere. As a side note I have an OLD big puller that was my uncle's, arms are probably 16 inches long. It...

Re: Running 230V Motor on 250V?

An article I recently read on electric motors explained the rpm ratings. With no slip a 4 pole motor would run at 1800 rpm as dictated by the 60 Hz line frequency. As you increase load you get increased slip and the rpm drops. The rated rpm is what the motor should spin at rated output.

Re: LED Bulbs for Fluorescent Lights?

I looked at replacing the lights in my shop a while back. The T8 floresent lights are 2800 - 3200 lumens per bulb, the led are 1800 - 2200 per tube. Think we'd be disappointed with the results of a direct replacement. If you compare the efficiencies the led aren't that much better. So I still have t...

Re: Container shelving layout suggestions

I get along pretty good with the building inspector here. Tried to convince him this was temporary, as it was only a roof over the containers. Turns out you need to get a permit to move the containers onto your property. Opps they'd been here 5 or 6 years by then. Lets not get going on building code...

Re: Container shelving layout suggestions

Blocking them a foot or so off the ground seams to make a big difference. I had a 20 footer in Alberta elevated on RR ties and had no problems, but the air is generally dry there. When I moved to Ontario I bought a second one and loaded the house and shop in them then had them trucked here. They sat...

My Logan has a 3/4 hp single phase. They're geared low enough that they don't need much power.

Re: Making an oil sight glass

A local glass shop should be able to cut a circle for you. They have wet belt sanders to take the disk to a smooth finished size. We had dozens of 1 1/2 to 2 inch disks cut for dump bailers to place cement on top of plugs in oil and gas wells.
