Re: How Much "Slap" Is Acceptable???

If you mean the drill chuck on the drill chuck arbor that is normal. Even the very expensive Albrecht chuck I have now is press fit onto a MT2 taper arbor. It's a 'non releasing' taper so should stay on there. The operative word being 'should'. If you twist them, bump them, hang them up then they wi...

Re: How Much "Slap" Is Acceptable???

I have to agree with TomB above on this. As a former Patriot 2012 CNC owner I had a lot of interaction with JT about the state of my machine on delivery. After many discussions on a bunch of topics it became apparent, and JT had no problem admitting it, but he is kind of at the mercy of the factory ...

Re: old hardness tester project! ideas please!

Yeah, I was thinking that when I looked at the photos but saw some other pieces there and it was so taken apart I couldn't be sure. Didn't want to look like too much of a newb. Plus I have seen a ton of Sheffield metrology stuff so wasn't sure they didn't make a hardness tester that happened to look...

Re: Any updated advice on DROs?

I have been using a Korean Jenix unit I got here http://www.digitalreadoutsystem.com/Jenix/jenix_dro.htm. They are out of southern California and their service has been great. Only annoyance is the time it takes to get ones not in stock when you order. Like a month to ship from Korea. I am impatient...

Re: old hardness tester project! ideas please!

My Sheffield indicator looks almost exactly like that. It looked so good cleaned up I am using it as a decoration in the living room. Actually that was until I found it still worked perfectly. Accurate to .0001 repeatably. Amazing after all these years. I use it to check other things for accuracy so...

Re: Show us your milling machine!

Well, I wasn't going to post a picture of my mill as it looks like junk compared to some of the restored beauty's in this thread but I figured if after 3+ years and 18 pages of posts I didn't see one Lagun I should put it in here. It's not pretty but it works really, really well. Surprised there are...

Re: Definition of lathe swing

Just as a reference Europe uses radius instead of diameter often in their reference to swing. That matches up with your idea of it. But it is only semantics. Tornitore45's answer on the actual physical part of it is dead on. You are just talking about a naming convention. Apparently enough people in...

Re: Drill press quill

I just bought a Grizzly 3/4 hp drill press a week ago. Not only does it run all the way down to 140rpm, the lowest I could find for reasonably priced DP so I could avoid burning larger bits that you aren't 'supposed' to use in your mill, but it has what I assume is a quill lock. There is twist handl...

Re: New vs Used

I agree with a lot of the sentiments above. You can get very good offshore stuff, you just have to know what you are getting into. I have a Tida TD-6B. It is listed as a 14.5 x 40. It is built more like a 16". It has D1-6 chuck, collet closer, metric and standard thread with just a pull of a kn...

Re: Oil reservoir on Rotary table (Ro-tab)?

They usually use an oil bath for the worm gear inside rotary tables, at least the larger ones I have seen. So yeah, they will have a fill plug and either a sight or level indicator on the fill plug.
